Energy sources — finite vs infinite
Finite (non-renewable) sources run out: fossil fuels coal, oil and gas (burnt, releasing carbon dioxide) and nuclear (uranium, a finite ore, low-carbon but finite). Infinite (renewable) sources are naturally replenished: solar, wind, hydro, tidal, wave, geothermal and biomass. Because finite sources are limited and polluting, designers use energy CONSERVATION (using less overall) and EFFICIENCY (more useful output per unit).
Designer's responsibility — the 6 Rs
The 6 Rs cut a product's environmental impact, in rough order of effect: Rethink, Refuse wasteful materials, Reduce material and energy, Reuse the product or parts, Repair rather than replace, Recycle what is left — recycling is a last resort. When selecting materials, weigh the life cycle: renewable or finite, extraction energy, recyclable, biodegradable or toxic — a specific reason, not "eco-friendly".
Recycling symbols, disassembly, obsolescence
Recycling symbols sort materials: the Mobius loop (three chasing arrows) means the material CAN be recycled; on plastics a 1–7 resin code in a triangle (1 PET, 2 HDPE, 3 PVC, 4 LDPE, 5 PP, 6 PS, 7 other). Design for disassembly uses screws, clips or snap-fits not glue, so parts separate for repair or recycling. A designed-in limited lifetime (planned obsolescence) shortens its life — sealed battery, dated styling — to boost sales.

Misreading "sustainable"
"Sustainable" is a weak-vocabulary word examiners flag, and most candidates get it the wrong way round. A sustainable material can be supplied without running out — a RENEWABLE resource such as beech, since trees are replanted. Aluminium is not: it is smelted from bauxite, a FINITE ore. Read "sustainable" as "supply can be maintained".

Biodegradable ≠ recyclable
Candidates often cannot use "biodegradable" — hardboard was widely missed. Biodegradable means broken down naturally by micro-organisms. Recyclable means reprocessed into new products. A material can be one, both or neither: paper is both; many plastics are recyclable but not biodegradable. Do not give one as a reason for the other.

Generic "eco-friendly" reason scores zero
On Paper 1 material-choice parts, environmental credit comes only from a SPECIFIC material with a SPECIFIC reason. Vague words — "eco-friendly", "green" — or a generic "plastic" score nothing. Marks went to a named material tied to a real property: card or Corriflute because it can be recycled, a replantable timber because it is renewable.

Fossil fuel called renewable
A recurring slip is naming a fossil fuel (coal, oil, gas) as a renewable energy source, or confusing "renewable" with "recyclable". Renewable describes an ENERGY SOURCE that is naturally replenished and never runs out — solar, wind, hydro, tidal, geothermal, biomass. Fossil fuels are finite, so non-renewable. Recyclable is about reprocessing a MATERIAL — a different idea.
Reuse is not recycle
Reuse and recycle are different steps often muddled. Reuse means using an item again AS IT IS, without reprocessing — refilling a bottle, passing it on. Recycle means REPROCESSING the material into something new — melting the bottle to make new plastic. Reuse keeps more embodied energy, so it sits above recycling.
Recycling symbol is not a guarantee
The Mobius loop (three chasing arrows) does NOT promise a product will be, or has been, recycled. It means the material CAN be recycled where facilities exist, or — with a percentage — that it holds that share of recycled content. Whether it is actually recycled depends on local collection and sorting. The symbol says the material is recyclable, not that the item is recycled.
Nuclear is low-carbon, not renewable
Believing nuclear power is renewable because it is low-carbon. Renewable means naturally replenished and never running out — sunlight, wind, water, geothermal, biomass. Nuclear fuel is uranium, a finite ore that is used up, so nuclear is NON-renewable even though low-carbon. Low-carbon and renewable differ; the finite group is fossil fuels and nuclear.
Name specifics and the environmental reason
Name specifics — a real material (beech, recycled PET) or strategy (disassembly, a refill format), never "eco-friendly". Give the reason: renewable vs finite, processing energy, recyclable, biodegradable or toxic — suited to THIS product.
Use a framework — 6 Rs or life cycle
Give a framework so the answer is complete, not a list. Use the 6 Rs in order — rethink and reduce prevent more waste than recycle, so lead with them — or the life cycle: material, manufacture, use, disposal. Tie each point to a stage or an R.
Evaluate: both sides and a judgement
When the command word is evaluate, discuss or assess, give BOTH sides — benefit AND drawback — since listing only advantages, or asserting "it is the best", caps the marks. Reach a justified judgement; a clear decision reaches the top band.
