Product analysis — judge against user needs
Product analysis judges how well an EXISTING product meets its user needs, under headings: function (does its job well and safely), ergonomics/anthropometrics (fits the user — grip, reach, weight), aesthetics (suits the user and setting), materials/manufacture (suitable, affordable) and cost/value. It shows what to keep, improve or avoid, and feeds a realistic specification. Anchor every judgement to the user and environment, not abstract features.
Scales of production — one-off, batch, mass
Match the scale to the quantity needed. One-off (job) makes a single product to order — high skill, high unit cost (a bespoke chair). Batch makes a set quantity in groups, reusing jigs and moulds so a run repeats (stools). Mass (continuous) makes very large volumes on automated lines — low unit cost, very high tooling cost (drinks bottles). As quantity rises, unit cost falls but tooling cost rises, so mass pays only at high volume.
Design proposal — stages, evaluate, model
A workable design proposal states the resources (materials, tools, time, cost) and ordered stages of manufacture. It balances function (works well and safely) with aesthetics — line, shape, form, proportion, space, colour, texture. It fits the user through anthropometrics (body data such as hand span) and ergonomics (comfort, efficiency, safety). Evaluate against the spec and test by modelling (card, foam or CAD) to fix faults cheaply.

Repeating the brief in the spec
The single most-repeated Paper-1 fault: writing specification points that re-state what the question already gives ("it must be portable", "must hold three coins"). These score nothing. A spec point must be ADDITIONAL and SPECIFIC — a new, measurable requirement tied to the user and environment, not a restatement of the brief.

Generic points — nice, cheap, easy to use
Adding specification points, candidates write GENERIC statements — "nice", "cheap", "easy to use" — that fit almost any product and score nothing. A useful point is specific, measurable and tied to the user: not "easy to hold" but "handle diameter suits a child's hand span of about 45 mm"; not "strong" but "supports a 10 kg load".

Generic or consumable material scores zero
Asked to name a material, candidates write a GENERIC name — "metal", "wood", "plastic" — which scores nothing. The mark needs a SPECIFIC material (mild steel, aluminium, acrylic, MDF) with a property reason ("acrylic because it is rigid and weatherproof"). Naming a consumable like "paint" (a finish, not a material) also fails.

Describing when asked to evaluate
Candidates DESCRIBE a proposal ("it has a wide base") instead of EVALUATING it — weighing positive AND negative features against the specification and reaching a justified judgement ("the wide base makes it stable but adds weight"). Two linked slips: the SAME evaluation for every idea, and unjustified assertions ("it works well").

Too few or near-identical ideas
Where a question wants THREE design ideas, a recurring lost mark is producing only two, or three that are essentially the same. Ideas must also meet ALL requirements — one satisfying only part of the brief (a rack for many bikes when one upright bike was required) is capped. Generate three genuinely different ideas, each meeting every requirement.

Mass production means quantity, not size
Two linked wrong beliefs. First, that "mass production" means the product's SIZE — it does not; it means a very large QUANTITY made continuously (drinks bottles are small yet mass-produced). Second, that more items cost more each — the opposite: as quantity rises to mass, UNIT cost falls because high tooling cost spreads over many items.
Anthropometrics vs ergonomics
Treating anthropometrics and ergonomics as the same word. Anthropometrics is the DATA — body measurements (hand span, seat height, reach, grip diameter), given as population ranges. Ergonomics is the DESIGN ACTIVITY — using that data, with comfort, efficiency and safety, so the product fits the user. Defining ergonomics as just "comfort" loses the mark.
Name it, justify it, weigh both sides
Name SPECIFICALLY (a material, scale or process, never a generic word); justify each choice to the user and spec with a property suiting THIS product; and for ergonomics cite anthropometric data ("grip suits a 90 mm hand width"), not "comfortable".
Sketches and notes must both add
Where a question says "sketches AND notes", sketches alone cannot gain full marks — notes must add information. The final drawing must be "sufficient for a skilled third party to make it": show construction details and key dimensions (credited).
Name the actual tools and process
For method of manufacture, vague descriptions lose marks reserved for NAMED tools. Match the process to the design, not one drilled method — applying "laser cutter" or "vacuum forming" regardless fails. Name a process suited to the material and scale.
