Use the two hearings and the pauses
In Paper 1 (Listening, AO1) every recording is played TWICE, with a pause before and writing time after. In the pause, read the English question and underline the question word (哪儿 where, 什么时候 when, 多久 how long). On hearing ONE, get the 大意 (dàyì, gist) and note a key word by each question. On hearing TWO, confirm the 细节 (xìjié, detail) and check WHOSE action and WHICH time each belongs to. Example (虚构): 「我最喜欢的季节是秋天,因为不冷也不热。」 — season = autumn, reason = neither cold nor hot.
Answer in precise English, one per mark
Paper 1 tests understanding, not writing — the questions are in English and you answer in English. Marks are lost far more to unclear English than to a failure to understand. Give ONE answer per mark: no slash (only the text before it counts), no brackets (they are ignored), no pinyin. Base every answer solely on the recording and sense-check it. Example (虚构): 「我每天坐公共汽车上学,大概要四十分钟。」 — a clear answer is "about 40 minutes", not a careless "one month and forty hours".
Gist, detail, opinion, or implication?
Paper 1 questions come in four kinds, each needing a different listen. GIST = the main idea. DETAIL = one fact, number, time or place. OPINION/ATTITUDE = how someone feels and why — listen for 觉得/认为 (juéde/rènwéi, to think) and 因为 (yīnwèi, because). IMPLIED = true but not said outright: 「今天很暖和,你不用穿毛衣。」 — asked the weather, you INFER "warm". Signal words 但是/可是 (dànshì/kěshì, but), 其实 (qíshí, actually), 虽然 (although) often introduce the real answer, so listen past them.
Drawn from real examiner reports.
Restating what was said, not what it shows
A "shows/implies" question wants your CONCLUSION, not the line you heard. From 「饭馆不大,可是每天晚上都坐满了人,上次等了半个小时才有位子」(small but full every night; queued for a seat) you INFER it is 很受欢迎 (popular). ✗ "the restaurant is not big" or "they waited half an hour" restates the words and scores nothing. On a "shows" question, write the idea the words point to, not the words.
Distractor-echo: wrong person or time
A word IS said, but attached to the wrong person or time. From 「我希望明年去中国工作,也希望我儿子大伟当医生」: what the father hopes to do himself = work in China; what he hopes 大伟 (Dawei) will do = become a doctor. ✗ giving 昨天 (yesterday) detail for a 明天 (tomorrow) question, or the son's plan for the father's. Name the person and time asked about, and check the detail fits THAT person and time.
Wrong number ticked, or wrong question word
Two marks-losing habits. First, in a multiple-response item tick EXACTLY the number stated: "tick three" means three — fewer under-answers, more has marks deducted. Second, answer the exact question word: ✗ a frequency (我常常……) for 在哪儿 (where), or "first year" for 多久 (how long). Match it: 哪儿 → place, 什么时候 → time, 多久 → length, 为什么 → reason. Underline the question word first.
The belief that if you HEAR a word in the recording, the answer option containing that word must be correct
Hearing a word does NOT make the matching option correct — the distractor-echo trap. The word may belong to a different person or time, or be NEGATED. ✗ ticking "swimming costume" from hearing 游泳衣, when the recording said 游泳衣不用带 (búyòng dài, no need to bring it) — it is OUT. Process the WHOLE clause — who, when, and whether it is negated — before you commit.
Comparison: which side is it true of?
When the recording compares two places or options, a detail is often true of only ONE — pin down which. In a Shenzhen-vs-Hong-Kong comparison "no passport needed" was true only for Shenzhen; a train-vs-drive comparison had to name BOTH legs. ✗ giving a fact for the wrong side, or naming one side when both are needed. Ask: true of A, of B, or both? — say which in your English.
Understood it, but wrote unclear English
Marks are lost far more to unclear English than to a failure to understand. An answer "open to misinterpretation", vaguely phrased or self-contradicting earns nothing even when you heard correctly. Write a plain, specific English answer that could only mean one thing, and base it SOLELY on the recording. One clear phrase beats a long hedge that leaves the examiner guessing.
Adding detail that changes the meaning
"Write only what you need to." Adding detail the recording did not give can change the meaning and lose a correct mark: "ten countries" when the text said ten cities cost the mark, and an extra clause can contradict the correct part. A full sentence is optional and RISKY — a short, exact answer is safer. Give what is asked and stop; add no guessed specifics.
In the pause, prep the question
In the PAUSE before each recording, underline the question word (where, when, how long, why) so you know what to listen FOR, and note how many answers a multiple-response item wants — tick three means three. Marking it first stops answering the wrong question.
Hearing one for gist, hearing two for detail
Split the work across the two plays. On HEARING ONE, get the 大意 (gist) and note a key word by each question. On HEARING TWO, confirm the 细节 (detail) and check WHOSE action and WHICH time each belongs to — this defeats distractor-echo. Use hearing two to verify, not restart.
Write precise English, then sense-check
Write a precise, unambiguous English answer — one per mark, no slash, no brackets, no pinyin. SENSE-CHECK it: plausible, and matches the question word? "40 minutes", not "one month and forty hours". For an opinion, pair the feeling with its reason (…因为…).
This leaf (Section S: Exam Skills, S1) is about how to score on Paper 1 Listening (AO1) -- the reusable technique, not a single topic. You hear recorded Chinese and answer questions that are printed and answered in English. Marks are lost far more often to careless technique and unclear English than to a real failure to understand.
Listening signal word: what does 但是 / 可是 tell you is coming?
You will "hear" this short recording (虚构录音稿). Read it, then answer the questions in English.
「小明说:我最喜欢的季节是秋天,因为不冷也不热。」 (Xiǎomíng shuō: Wǒ zuì xǐhuan de jìjié shì qiūtiān, yīnwèi bù lěng yě bú rè.)
(a) What is Xiaoming's favourite season? (b) Give the reason he gives.
