Develop with 因为; weigh up with 优点/缺点
Add a reason with 因为 (because) after every opinion, and use 优点是……,缺点是…… when asked to weigh something up. Example: 我觉得做志愿工作很有意义,因为可以帮助别人。(Wǒ juéde zuò zhìyuàn gōngzuò hěn yǒu yìyì, yīnwèi kěyǐ bāngzhù biérén.) — Voluntary work is meaningful, because it helps others. 参加课外活动的优点是可以认识新朋友,缺点是会占用一些学习时间。 — the advantage is meeting new friends; the disadvantage is it takes up study time.
Vary tenses and vocabulary on purpose
Show BOTH a past and a future structure in the same conversation, not one safe tense repeated, and use precise topic vocabulary not a vague word. Example: 我以前参加过合唱团,以后还打算加入辩论社。(Wǒ yǐqián cānjiāguo héchàngtuán, yǐhòu hái dǎsuàn jiārù biànlùnshè.) — I took part in the choir before, and in future plan to join the debate club. This shows 过 (past) and 打算 (future) together, plus two precise activity names rather than the generic 课外活动.
Match the aspect marker to the time-cue word
Recognise the time-cue word FIRST, then choose the aspect that matches it: 了 or 过 for a completed/past action, 会/要/打算 for a future plan. Past example (experience, with 过): 我去年做过志愿工作,在图书馆帮忙。(Wǒ qùnián zuòguo zhìyuàn gōngzuò, zài túshūguǎn bāngmáng.) — Last year I did voluntary work, helping at the library. Future example (with 打算): 我下个假期打算去做志愿者。(Wǒ xià gè jiàqī dǎsuàn qù zuò zhìyuànzhě.) — Next holiday I plan to volunteer.
Drawn from real examiner reports.
Wrong time frame for a past/future-cued task
✗ Q: 你去年做了什么志愿工作?A: 我会做志愿工作,在学校帮忙。(会 is a future marker, wrong for a last-year question) ✓ 去年我做了志愿工作,在学校帮忙组织活动。(Qùnián wǒ zuòle zhìyuàn gōngzuò, zài xuéxiào bāngmáng zǔzhī huódòng.) — Last year I did voluntary work, helping to organise activities at school. Match the aspect marker (了/过 for past, 会/要/打算 for future) to the time word in the question.
Speaking: wrong time frame for a task that explicitly cues past or future -- the single most common Speaking-grammar error (s22 Card 2 task 4; s22 Card 6 tasks 3-4; s23 Topic 5 Q3).
One unknown prompt word sinks the whole task
✗ Not recognising 设施 (shèshī -- facilities) means the candidate cannot attempt the task at all. ✓ Pre-learn the words the digest names as single points of failure: 志愿工作 (voluntary work), 优点/缺点 (advantage/disadvantage), 设施 (facilities), 经验 (experience), 性格 (character), 气候 (climate). Knowing them lets you attempt the ORIGINAL question.
Speaking: a single unknown prompt or question-word makes the whole task missed, not just imprecise -- voluntary work (s22 Card 6), advantage/disadvantage (s23 Topics 1/4/5), facilities (s22 Topic 6; s23 Card 9), experience (s22 Card 2; s23 Topic 1), character (s23 Topic 2), climate (s22 Topic 5).
Answers the WHAT but never the WHY
✗ Q: 你觉得做志愿工作有什么优点?A: 我觉得做志愿工作有优点。(states there is an advantage, but never says what it is or why) ✓ 我觉得做志愿工作的优点是可以帮助别人,因为这样我会更开心。(Wǒ juéde zuò zhìyuàn gōngzuò de yōudiǎn shì kěyǐ bāngzhù biérén, yīnwèi zhèyàng wǒ huì gèng kāixīn.) — The advantage of voluntary work is helping others, because it makes me happier. Always follow a factual claim with 因为 and a genuine reason.
Speaking: candidates answer the factual WHAT but fail the follow-up WHY -- a cross-cutting weakness (s22 Topic 4 Q3/Q4; s23 Topics 1/3/4/5, the advantage/disadvantage pattern).
Reciting a script, not the real question
✗ Answering with a memorised, unrelated sentence rather than the question actually asked -- a rehearsed monologue does not answer the real prompt. ✓ Listen to the real question, adapt your prepared vocabulary to it, and ask a short question back, e.g. 你呢?(Nǐ ne?) — what about you? Genuine interaction lifts the Communication band, not recall of a set piece.
Speaking Communication: reciting a rehearsed monologue rather than answering the real question, and not keeping the exchange going (general FL trap).
Tasks 1-2 fine, tasks 3-5 collapse
✗ Answering the easy opening tasks (a greeting, a simple fact) well, then producing nothing for the later tasks that need a past or future time frame or a justified opinion. ✓ Prepare for tasks 3-5 specifically: rehearse switching to 了/过 (past) and 会/要/打算 (future), and adding a reason with 因为, because that is where marks are actually won or lost on a role-play card.
Speaking: role-play tasks 1-2 are simple and handled well, but tasks 3-5 (past/future time frames and opinions) are where marks are lost (s22 and s23 general comments).
Always waiting for the simplified question
✗ Waiting for the teacher to offer the easier, rephrased alternative every time instead of attempting the original question -- relying on the simplified version caps the Communication band. ✓ If you know the key word (设施, 性格, 气候), answer the ORIGINAL question straight away; examiners only offer the alternative when it is needed, so leaning on it signals weaker understanding.
Speaking: candidates often need the simplified alternative question to access an idea at all, which caps their Communication band (s22 Topic 5; s23 Topic 6).
A short correct answer scores well on its own
A brief answer reaches only the lowest Communication bands even if correct. ✗ 你喜欢什么课外活动?— 我喜欢足球。(correct, not developed) ✓ 我喜欢踢足球,因为可以跟朋友一起运动,也能让我放松。(Wǒ xǐhuan tī zúqiú, yīnwèi kěyǐ gēn péngyou yìqǐ yùndòng, yě néng ràng wǒ fàngsōng.) — I like football because I exercise with friends and relax. The top band needs a developed, justified answer, not just a correct one.
Spot the time cue, then pick the marker
Listen for the time-cue word first: 去年/上次/以前 (last year/last time/before) signals PAST, so use 了 or 过; 下次/以后/将来 (next time/in future) signals FUTURE, so use 会/要/打算. Matching the marker to the cue avoids the most common Speaking-grammar error.
Justify every opinion with a reason
Never leave an opinion as a bare fact. Add 因为 (because) plus a genuine reason, and when a question asks you to weigh something up, use 优点是……,缺点是…… (the advantage is…, the disadvantage is…). A developed, justified answer is what reaches the top Communication band.
Answer the original question confidently
If you recognise the key word, answer the ORIGINAL question at once instead of waiting for the simplified alternative -- examiners offer the easier version only when needed, and leaning on it caps your Communication band. Pre-learn words like 设施, 经验 and 性格.
Interact to keep the conversation going
Do not recite a prepared monologue. Respond to the actual question, then keep the exchange natural by asking a short question back, e.g. 你呢?/你觉得呢?(Nǐ ne? / Nǐ juéde ne?) — what about you? Natural interaction, not a memorised set piece, marks the higher bands.
Paper 3 Speaking (AO3) is teacher-conducted and has two parts. The role play is a card of five short tasks -- a transactional exchange testing factual, past-tense, future-tense and opinion answers, marked on completing the task and using correct register. The topic conversation is five questions on one syllabus area (Areas A to E), testing extended spoken discourse -- developing answers, giving opinions with reasons, and keeping a natural exchange going rather than reciting a memorised script. Both parts are marked on two things together: Communication (relevance, development, justified opinions) and Quality of Language (range of structures including correct past/future time frames, range of vocabulary, and pronunciation/fluency/intonation).
