Predict from the options, then hear it out
Paper 1 is 30 MCQs across five exercises. Before a recording starts, read the options and predict what TYPE of detail decides the answer — a place, a time, a feeling. 例:「我本来想去公园,但是下雨,就改去图书馆了。」(Wǒ běnlái xiǎng qù gōngyuán, dànshì xiàyǔ, jiù gǎi qù túshūguǎn le.) — I first wanted the park, but it rained, so I changed to the library. The question "where did they actually go" needs 图书馆, not the first-named 公园.
Wait for the 但是 turn before deciding
Many questions, especially the opinion exercise (Q16–20), hinge on a two-clause sentence where the second clause overrides the first. 例:「这家餐厅的菜很好吃,但是服务太慢了。」(Zhè jiā cāntīng de cài hěn hǎochī, dànshì fúwù tài màn le.) — The food is delicious, but the service is too slow. "Overall opinion of the restaurant" needs BOTH clauses — food good, service bad — not just the first, positive one. Missing the 但是 clause turns a mixed opinion into a wrongly one-sided answer.
One missed 不 or direction flips the answer
A single missed word can invert an otherwise-understood answer. 例:「我家不在北边,在南边。」(Wǒ jiā bú zài běibian, zài nánbian.) — My home is not in the north, it is in the south. Miss the negative 不 and its correction and you land on the wrong direction. Train your ear for negation (不/没/不是) and for direction and quantity words — 东/南/西/北 (east/south/west/north), 更多/更少 (more/less) — since these single syllables carry the whole answer.
Drawn from real examiner reports.
Ticking a true detail with the wrong owner
✗ Hearing 「东边」(dōngbian, east) in the extract and ticking "east" when the question asks where the LIBRARY is. ✓ Track which place each detail attaches to: 「图书馆在北边,学校在东边。」(Túshūguǎn zài běibian, xuéxiào zài dōngbian.) — The library is in the north, the school in the east. The library is 北边, not 东边 — a true detail, but it belongs to the school.
Grounded in the cambridge-0547 digest (Listening, Distractor-echo): across both sittings the majority of wrong answers echo a word genuinely spoken but attached to the wrong idea/person/place, e.g. s22 P11 Q24 (half picked "to the east", which WAS mentioned, instead of "to the north", which was asked) and s23 P11 Q21.
Answering from the first clause only
✗ Hearing 「这次考试不太难」(bú tài nán, not too hard) and stopping there, missing the following 「但是我还是没考好」(dànshì wǒ háishì méi kǎohǎo, but I still did not do well) — and wrongly concluding the speaker is satisfied. ✓ Listen to the FULL two-clause sentence first: the exam was manageable but the speaker is still unhappy with the result — a mixed, not positive, opinion.
Grounded in the cambridge-0547 digest (Listening, "only understanding one clause is a recurring failure mode"): s23 P11 Q17 (a third understood only the first clause and missed a contrasting second clause) and s22 P11 Q16 (registered a negative first clause but missed a positive second, or vice versa).
Grabbing one phrase, not the whole chunk
✗ Hearing 「我爸爸以前是医生」(my dad used to be a doctor) partway through and answering a question about the SPEAKER's own job with "doctor". ✓ Follow the whole chunk: 「我爸爸以前是医生,不过我自己是老师。」(Wǒ bàba yǐqián shì yīshēng, búguò wǒ zìjǐ shì lǎoshī.) — My dad used to be a doctor, but I myself am a teacher. The speaker's own job is 老师, not 医生 — a detail heard early can belong to someone else.
Grounded in the cambridge-0547 digest (Listening): "Listen to the whole chunk, do not just pick out a phrase" is explicit examiner advice at both sittings, most pointed in the final interview exercise (s23 P11 Q30, P12 Q30); s23 P11 Q26 names candidates mixing a parent's occupation with the speaker's own.
Missing a single negative word
Even with the rest understood, dropping one negative reverses the answer. 例:「我不太喜欢辣的,我比较喜欢甜的。」(Wǒ bú tài xǐhuan là de, wǒ bǐjiào xǐhuan tián de.) — I do not much like spicy food, I prefer sweet. A listener who misses 不太 hears "likes spicy" and picks the wrong option; the real preference (甜的) comes after 比较喜欢. Listen actively for 不/没/不是 as answer-deciding syllables.
Grounded in the cambridge-0547 digest Listening findings: missing a single negative or qualifying word flips the answer, named at both sittings (s22 P11 Q17 "missing the negative word in the clause", s22 P11 Q19 "misled by the negative word", s22 P12 Q22 "missing the verb").
Matching on the first shared word
In the matching exercise (Q11–15) two speakers often mention the same idea early before diverging. ✗ Pairing a speaker to a statement on that shared word alone. ✓ Listen to each speaker's whole turn and match on the detail that proves the statement — e.g. which speaker links the activity to feeling happier — not the first overlapping word.
Grounded in the cambridge-0547 digest Listening findings: matching-exercise (Q11–15) errors cluster on near-miss options where two speakers mention overlapping ideas before diverging (s22 P11 Q12, s23 P11 Q11, s23 P12 Q11/Q14).
A heard word need not be the answer
Examiners plant a genuinely-spoken detail belonging to someone OTHER than the question asks about. 例:「小美弹钢琴,她哥哥踢足球。」(Xiǎoměi tán gāngqín, tā gēge tī zúqiú.) — Xiaomei plays piano, her brother plays football. If "football" is offered for "what does Xiaomei like", it tests whether you attach 踢足球 to 哥哥, not 小美. Always check WHOSE detail it is, not just that the word was said.
Predict, then follow the whole chunk
Before each recording, read the options and predict what TYPE of detail decides it — a place, a time, an opinion. As it plays, follow the WHOLE chunk of speech, not just the first familiar word: an early detail may belong to the wrong person or place.
Track negatives and check for a turn
Listen actively for negative words (不/没/不是) and direction/quantity words — one missed syllable flips the answer. For any opinion question, wait for a possible second clause after 但是/不过/可是 that overrides the first before you commit to positive, negative, or mixed.
Shade exactly one answer box
Every Paper 1 question is multiple choice, so a correct hearing still scores zero if you shade two boxes for one question — that voids the mark. Choose one option per question, and if you change your mind, make sure only your final choice is shaded on the answer sheet.
Paper 1 Listening is 30 multiple-choice questions, all AO1 (understanding and responding to spoken Mandarin), across five exercises of rising difficulty:
There are no written answers on the real paper -- every question is multiple choice, so the skill being tested is accurate listening comprehension, not writing.
What is the Chinese word for "but" that signals a "turn" -- a second clause overriding the first -- and how is it used in a sentence?
