把: specific object + verb + complement
把 (bǎ) fronts a specific object so the sentence can state what happens TO it. Pattern: Subject + 把 + object (definite — "that/this/my ___", not "a ___") + Verb + a complement (result, direction or place). 我把作业做完了。(Wǒ bǎ zuòyè zuò wán le.) — I finished the homework. 请把窗户打开。(Qǐng bǎ chuānghu dǎkāi.) — Please open the window. Two rules: (1) the object must be specific/known (那个, 这个, 我的 + noun); (2) the verb must carry a complement — a bare verb after 把 is incomplete.
被 passive: receiver subject, agent optional
被 (bèi) turns the person or thing something happens TO into the grammatical subject. Pattern: Subject (receiver) + 被 + (agent, optional) + Verb + complement. Named agent: 我的手机被弟弟弄坏了。(Wǒ de shǒujī bèi dìdi nòng huài le.) — My phone was broken by my brother. Agent left out: 那本书被借走了。(Nà běn shū bèi jiè zǒu le.) — That book has been borrowed. Use 被 mainly to highlight what happened to the receiver, often something unwelcome — not for every English "was done".
Active / 把 / 被: three tellings of one event
One event, three tellings: 我打破了那个杯子。(plain active) / 我把那个杯子打破了。(Wǒ bǎ nàge bēizi dǎpò le. — 把 keeps 我 as agent, focus on what I did) / 那个杯子被我打破了。(Nàge bēizi bèi wǒ dǎpò le. — 被 makes the cup the subject, focus on what happened to it). Choose 把 to foreground the agent acting on a definite object; 被 to foreground the receiver. Static/mental verbs — 是, 有, 喜欢, 知道, 姓 — never take 把, because nothing is being disposed of or changed.
Drawn from real examiner reports.
把 cannot take a static/mental verb (把喜欢)
✗ 我把喜欢中国菜。把 cannot attach to 喜欢, a mental/static verb — there is nothing being disposed of or changed. ✓ 我喜欢中国菜。(Wǒ xǐhuan Zhōngguó cài.) — I like Chinese food. Verbs like 是, 有, 喜欢, 知道 and 姓 describe a state, not an action on an object, so they never appear in a 把 sentence.
(general FL trap)
把 needs a specific, known object
✗ 我把一个苹果吃完了。一个苹果 is "an apple", not a specific, already-known one, so 把 cannot be used. ✓ 我把那个苹果吃完了。(Wǒ bǎ nàge píngguǒ chī wán le.) — I finished eating that apple. If the object is not identifiable to the listener, drop 把 and use a plain sentence: 我吃了一个苹果。(Wǒ chī le yí ge píngguǒ.) — I ate an apple.
(general FL trap)
Bare verb after 把 needs a complement
✗ 我把作业做。The verb 做 stands alone — a 把 sentence needs a complement after the verb. ✓ 我把作业做完了。(Wǒ bǎ zuòyè zuò wán le.) — I finished the homework. After 把, the verb must be followed by a result, direction or place complement (做完, 拿过来, 放在桌子上); a bare verb is always incomplete.
(general FL trap)
了 misplaced inside the 把 verb (做了完)
✗ 我把作业做了完。了 has been inserted between the verb 做 and its complement 完. ✓ 我把作业做完了。(Wǒ bǎ zuòyè zuò wán le.) — I finished the homework. 了 must come AFTER the whole verb + complement unit (做完了), never in the middle of it. This is the same misplaced-了 error the examiner reports flag repeatedly.
(s22, s23)
被 subject is the receiver, not the agent
✗ 我被吃了那个苹果。This calques "the apple was eaten by me", but 被's subject must be the RECEIVER, not the eater. ✓ 那个苹果被我吃了。(Nàge píngguǒ bèi wǒ chī le.) — That apple was eaten by me. In a 被 sentence the thing something happens TO comes first, then 被, then the agent.
(general FL trap)
Do not mix 把 and 被 in one clause
✗ 我的作业被我把弄丢了。Both 把 and 被 mark the same verb — that is ungrammatical, so choose ONE. ✓ 我把作业弄丢了。(Wǒ bǎ zuòyè nòng diū le.) — I lost the homework. OR 我的作业被弄丢了。(Wǒ de zuòyè bèi nòng diū le.) — My homework got lost. Use 把 to keep the agent as subject, 被 to make the receiver the subject — never both at once.
(general FL trap)
把 is not just optional word order
把 is not decorative word order — it is grammatical only when the object is SPECIFIC and the verb carries a result, direction or place complement, and it cannot be used with static/mental verbs at all. ✗ 我把喜欢中国菜。(把 cannot attach to 喜欢) ✓ 我喜欢中国菜。(Wǒ xǐhuan Zhōngguó cài.) — I like Chinese food. 把 changes what a sentence can grammatically do, not just its word order.
Not every English passive needs 被
Many ideas that are passive in English are more natural stated ACTIVELY in Chinese, especially when the agent is obvious. 被 is reserved mainly for foregrounding the receiver — often because something unwelcome happened. "The window was opened (by me)" is usually just 我打开了窗户。(Wǒ dǎkāi le chuānghu.), while "My phone was broken by my brother" naturally takes 被: 我的手机被弟弟弄坏了。
Static or mental verb? Never use 把
First check the verb. If it is static or mental — 是, 有, 喜欢, 知道, 姓 — never use 把 or 被; write a plain sentence: 我喜欢中国菜。(Wǒ xǐhuan Zhōngguó cài.) 把 and 被 only work with action verbs that do something TO a specific object.
把 = specific object + verb + complement
When you want to keep the AGENT as subject and state a result, use 把: 把 + a specific, already-known object + verb + a result/direction/place complement. Both parts are compulsory — a non-specific object or a bare verb after 把 is wrong. 我把作业做完了 ✓, 我把一个苹果吃 ✗.
被 foregrounds the receiver (often unwelcome)
Use 被 when you want the object/receiver itself to be the subject — especially for something unwelcome, unexpected, or when the agent is unknown. 我的手机被弟弟弄坏了。(Wǒ de shǒujī bèi dìdi nòng huài le.) The agent after 被 is optional: 那本书被借走了。
Never combine 把 and 被 on one verb
One clause can carry 把 OR 被, never both on the same verb. Before submitting a sentence about what happened to a specific thing, check you have chosen a single perspective: 我把作业弄丢了 (agent as subject) or 我的作业被弄丢了 (receiver as subject), not a mix of the two.
This grammar point (Section G, G7) covers two related structures for talking about what happens to a specific thing: the 把 (bǎ) disposal sentence, which keeps the AGENT as the subject and states a result, and the 被 (bèi) passive, which makes the RECEIVER the subject. Both are edge-of-scope at foreign-language level -- introduced here with simple, clearly-glossed examples, not exhaustive drilling.
把 (bǎ) fronts a specific, already-known object so the sentence can state exactly what happened to it -- the verb MUST be followed by a result, direction or place complement; a bare verb after 把 is incomplete. 被 (bèi) makes the person or thing something happens TO into the grammatical subject; the agent (who did it) is optional. Neither structure works with static or mental verbs (是, 有, 喜欢, 知道, 姓) -- there is nothing being "disposed of" or changed with these.
Say in Chinese using 把: I finished the homework. (a specific piece of homework, add a result complement)
写出两个用「把」的句子和两个用「被」的句子,每个句子的宾语要具体,动词后面要有合适的补语,并标注拼音和英文翻译。
