Result complement 完/懂/到 marks the outcome
A result complement attaches straight after the verb to name the OUTCOME. 完 (wán) marks the whole action finished: 我写完作业了。(Wǒ xiě wán zuòyè le.) — I have finished my homework. 懂 (dǒng) marks comprehension achieved: 我听懂了。(Wǒ tīng dǒng le.) — I understood. 到 (dào) marks the goal attained: 我找到钥匙了。(Wǒ zhǎo dào yàoshi le.) — I found my keys. The plain verb + 了 (我写了作业) does NOT confirm it is finished. Only the complement supplies finished/understood/achieved.
Direction complement 来/去; place-object order
来 (lái) = motion towards the speaker; 去 (qù) = away from the speaker. A compound complement joins a direction word (上/下/进/出/回/过) with 来/去: 进来 (jìnlái) come in, 出去 (chūqù) go out, 回来 (huílái) come back. When the verb takes a PLACE object, the place sits BETWEEN the two parts: Verb + 进/出/回 + place + 来/去. 他走进教室来。(Tā zǒu jìn jiàoshì lái.) — He walked into the classroom. A simple case with no object: 请进来。(Qǐng jìnlái.) — Please come in.
得 degree complement and the three "de"
的, 地 and 得 all sound "de" but do different jobs. 的 (before a NOUN): 漂亮的衣服 (piàoliang de yīfu) — beautiful clothes. 地 (before a VERB, manner): 高兴地说 (gāoxìng de shuō) — said happily. 得 (after a VERB, degree/result): 他跑得很快。(Tā pǎo de hěn kuài.) — He runs very fast. When the verb has an object, repeat the verb — once with the object, once before 得: 他说汉语说得很流利。(Tā shuō Hànyǔ shuō de hěn liúlì.) — He speaks Chinese very fluently.
Drawn from real examiner reports.
得 vs 的 after a verb (跑得快)
✗ 他跑的很快。The particle 的 has been used for the complement marker 得. ✓ 他跑得很快。(Tā pǎo de hěn kuài.) — He runs very fast. When "de" comes right AFTER the verb and describes degree or result, it must be 得, never 的. 的 belongs only before a noun, as in 漂亮的衣服 (beautiful clothes).
(s22, s23)
地 vs 的 before a verb (高兴地说)
✗ 她高兴的笑了。The particle 的 has been used for the adverbial marker 地 before the verb 笑. ✓ 她高兴地笑了。(Tā gāoxìng de xiào le.) — She laughed happily. When "de" comes right BEFORE the verb and describes the manner of the action, it must be 地, not 的 — 地 marks how the action is done.
(general FL trap)
Missing 了 after a result complement
✗ 我写完作业,然后看电视。With no 了 anywhere this reads as an untensed, habitual statement, not a completed event. ✓ 我写完作业了。(Wǒ xiě wán zuòyè le.) — I finished my homework. 了 can sit right after the complement (写完了) or at the end of the clause, but a completed result-complement sentence must not be left with no 了 at all.
(s22, s23)
得 after the object, not a repeated verb
✗ 他说汉语得很好。得 has been attached to the object 汉语, not to a verb. ✓ 他说汉语说得很好。(Tā shuō Hànyǔ shuō de hěn hǎo.) — He speaks Chinese very well. 得 can only follow a VERB, so when the verb has an object the verb must be said twice: once with its object (说汉语), once immediately before 得 (说得).
(general FL trap)
Place object outside the 来/去 complement
✗ 他走进去教室。The place object 教室 has been pushed outside the compound complement. ✓ 他走进教室来。(Tā zǒu jìn jiàoshì lái.) — He walked into the classroom. A PLACE object must sit BETWEEN the two parts of a compound direction complement: 走 + 进 + 教室 + 来, never after both parts.
(general FL trap)
Choosing the wrong result complement
The three result complements are not interchangeable. 完 = the whole action finished (写完 finished writing); 懂 = comprehension achieved (听懂 understood); 到 = the goal attained (找到 found). ✗ 我听完了 means "I finished listening", NOT "I understood". ✓ 我听懂了。(Wǒ tīng dǒng le.) — pick the complement that names the actual outcome, not just any completed action.
(general FL trap)
了 alone does not confirm the outcome
了 marks that an action happened or a state changed — it does NOT by itself confirm the OUTCOME. 我看了那本书 (Wǒ kàn le nà běn shū) only means "I read that book" — not that it was finished. Only 我看完了那本书。(Wǒ kàn wán le nà běn shū.) confirms completion, because 完 supplies "the whole thing is done". Likewise 我听了 = "I listened", but only 我听懂了 confirms it was understood.
Routine: outcome / direction / degree
Ask what the verb is adding. OUTCOME (finished, understood, achieved)? → 完/懂/到, usually with 了. WHICH WAY it moves relative to the speaker? → a direction complement 来/去, place object in the middle. HOW WELL or TO WHAT DEGREE? → 得 + adjective straight after the verb.
Every "de": 的 noun, 地 verb, 得 after verb
Every time you write "de", place it by position: before a NOUN it is 的 (漂亮的衣服), before a VERB describing manner it is 地 (高兴地说), after a VERB describing degree or result it is 得 (跑得很快). This one positional check fixes the commonest particle error in this topic.
Repeat the verb before 得 if it has an object
Before writing a 得 degree complement, check whether the verb has an object. If it does, say the verb twice — once with the object, once before 得: 他说汉语说得很流利 (not 他说汉语得很流利). With no object, a single verb is enough: 他跑得很快。
Check 来/去 matches the speaker viewpoint
Choose 来 or 去 by the speaker's position each time, not by a fixed rule. 来 = the action moves TOWARDS the speaker (请进来 come in, to me); 去 = AWAY from the speaker (我出去 I go out). In a narrative, "the speaker" is wherever the narrator is standing at that moment.
This grammar point (Section G, G6) covers three ways Chinese adds extra information straight after the main verb: result complements (完/懂/到), direction complements (来/去 and their compounds), and degree/manner complements (得 + adjective) -- plus the three-way contrast between 的, 地 and 得, which all sound the same ("de") but do different jobs. These structures show up across Writing and Speaking whenever a task asks you to say what you finished, which way something moved, or how well something was done.
A result complement (完/懂/到) attaches right after the verb to name the specific OUTCOME achieved -- finished, understood, or attained. A direction complement (来/去, or a compound like 上来/出去/进来) attaches right after a motion verb to show which way the action goes relative to the speaker. A degree/manner complement (得 + adjective) attaches right after the verb to say HOW WELL or TO WHAT DEGREE the action was done. All three sit immediately after the verb -- never before it.
Say in Chinese: I have finished writing my homework. (use the result complement 完)
