庆祝 / 过 / 度过 are not interchangeable
Three related but DISTINCT verbs. 庆祝 (qìngzhù -- celebrate, formal) takes a festival/event: 我们庆祝春节。过 (guò) is the everyday spoken verb for observing a festival: 我们家每年都过春节。(Wǒmen jiā měi nián dōu guò Chūnjié.) 度过 (dùguò) means to spend/pass a PERIOD OF TIME, not to mark an occasion: 我在中国度过了一个愉快的假期。(Wǒ zài Zhōngguó dùguòle yí gè yúkuài de jiàqī.) — I spent a pleasant holiday in China. Never use 度过 for celebrating a festival.
Group festival customs/food; link with 的
Use 的 (de) to attach a custom or food to its festival: 春节的习俗 (Spring Festival's customs), 中秋节的月饼 (Mid-Autumn's mooncakes). Core customs -- Spring Festival: 红包 (hóngbāo -- red envelope), 舞龙 (wǔlóng -- dragon dance), 团圆饭 (tuányuánfàn -- reunion dinner); Mid-Autumn: 赏月 (shǎngyuè -- admire the moon), 月饼 (yuèbǐng -- mooncake). Example: 春节的时候,长辈会给晚辈红包。(Chūnjié de shíhou, zhǎngbèi huì gěi wǎnbèi hóngbāo.) — At Spring Festival, elders give red envelopes to younger family members.
Compare with 跟……比, then give an opinion
To compare, use 跟……比 (gēn…bǐ -- compared with…): 跟我自己的新年比,中国的春节更热闹。(Gēn wǒ zìjǐ de xīnnián bǐ, Zhōngguó de Chūnjié gèng rènào.) — Compared with my own New Year, China's Spring Festival is more lively. For a mix of similarity and difference use 虽然……,但是……也有相似的地方. A comparison task always needs a personal opinion justified with 因为, not just a list of customs with no view given.
Drawn from real examiner reports.
度过 (spend time) ≠ 庆祝/过 (celebrate)
✗ 我度过了春节。(implies merely passing time, not marking the occasion, when "celebrate" is meant) ✓ 我们家过春节/庆祝春节。(Wǒmen jiā guò Chūnjié / qìngzhù Chūnjié.) — My family celebrates Spring Festival. 度过 belongs with a stretch of time that has no occasion-marking sense: 度过一个愉快的假期 (spend a pleasant holiday), not 度过春节 when "celebrate" is intended.
Digest: the international-world topic conversation names a repeated failure to tell "to celebrate" from the easier "to spend [time]" (s22 Topic 5, s23 Topic 6).
Bare 有很多习俗 with no custom named
✗ 春节有很多习俗。(a bare restatement of the question, no specific custom named) ✓ 春节最有意思的习俗是长辈给晚辈红包,祝他们新年快乐。(Chūnjié zuì yǒuyìsi de xísú shì zhǎngbèi gěi wǎnbèi hóngbāo, zhù tāmen xīnnián kuàilè.) — The most interesting custom of Spring Festival is that elders give red envelopes, wishing younger relatives a happy new year. Name an actual custom, not just a claim that customs exist.
Digest: the there-are-many-benefits-of-X bare restatement fails top-band Task Completion (s22 Q3(a); s23 41/42/43 Key Messages) -- the same trap applies to a describe-a-custom task.
了 on a habitual festival sentence (每年都……了)
了 marks completion or change of state, not habitual actions signalled by 每年/每天. ✗ 我们家每年都过了春节。✓ 我们家每年都过春节。(Wǒmen jiā měi nián dōu guò Chūnjié.) — My family celebrates Spring Festival every year. For a genuinely completed past action, keep 了: 去年除夕,我们吃了团圆饭。(Qùnián chúxī, wǒmen chīle tuányuánfàn.) — Last New Year's Eve we ate a reunion dinner.
Digest: 了/过/着 aspect-marker misuse is among the most heavily documented grammar errors at every sitting and every writing component, including a wrongly placed past-tense 了 (s22, s23).
Wrong measure word for a meal: 个 not 顿
A meal takes the measure word 顿 (dùn), not the generic 个. ✗ 一个团圆饭 ✓ 一顿团圆饭 (yí dùn tuányuánfàn) — one reunion dinner. Learn the noun with its measure word as a chunk: 一顿饭 (a meal), 一顿团圆饭 (a reunion dinner). 个 is the default measure word but does not collocate with a meal.
(general FL trap) -- inferred measure-word collocation for a meal; the digest names measure-word misuse as a recurring error (s22, s23) but gives no 顿 example.
Do not split 团圆饭 into 团圆的饭
团圆饭 (reunion dinner) is a FIXED compound -- do not insert 的 to make 团圆的饭. ✗ 团圆的饭 ✓ 团圆饭 (tuányuánfàn). Likewise 中秋节 and 春联 are fixed units. Learn each festival term as one whole word, and do not break it apart with 的 the way a describing phrase (好吃的饭 -- tasty food) would.
(general FL trap) -- fixed-collocation error, not individually cited in the digest.
跟……比 needs 跟 and 比; 更 before adjective
跟……比 introduces the point of comparison at the start of the sentence, then states the conclusion; 更 goes BEFORE the adjective. ✗ 中国的春节我自己的新年热闹。(no 跟/比) ✓ 跟我自己的新年比,中国的春节更热闹。(Gēn wǒ zìjǐ de xīnnián bǐ, Zhōngguó de Chūnjié gèng rènào.) — Compared with my own New Year, China's Spring Festival is more lively. Do not drop 跟 or 比, and do not misplace 更.
Digest: comparison-with-比 misuse appears on the grammar-improvement checklist at multiple components, both sittings (s22, s23).
春节 has no fixed Gregorian date (农历)
Many candidates assume 春节 falls on a fixed date such as 1 January, because their own New Year does. ✗ 春节永远是一月一日。✓ 春节按照农历计算,日期每年不同。(Chūnjié ànzhào nónglì jìsuàn, rìqī měi nián bùtóng.) — Spring Festival is set by the lunar calendar, so the date differs each year. 农历 (nónglì) governs 春节 and 中秋节, not the Gregorian calendar.
Four-step routine for a festivals task
Listening: the later clause gives the answer
When a speaker mentions more than one custom or activity, distractor-echo is common: the first custom named is often the trap. Process the whole chunk and listen for a LATER clause that gives the real answer, rather than picking the first festival word you recognise.
Reading: name the exact custom, no lifting
A festival passage often lists several customs, so pin down which one the question asks about and answer with a precise, concise phrase -- copying a whole sentence (over-lifting) earns no credit. Match the question word to the detail asked.
This topic (Area E: The International World, E2) covers Chinese culture and customs, the major festivals (Spring Festival 春节, Mid-Autumn Festival 中秋节), food culture, traditions and etiquette, and comparing Chinese customs with your own culture. It appears in listening and reading (comprehension about how someone celebrates a festival), functional and extended writing (a message describing a festival experience, an article comparing festivals across cultures), and the speaking role play and topic conversation (talking about a festival, giving an opinion, comparing cultures).
