Country/language vocab; a language takes 门
Nationality = country name + 人 (英国 Yīngguó -- the UK → 英国人 Yīngguó rén -- a British person). Language names mostly end in 语/文 (法语 Fǎyǔ -- French, 中文/汉语 Zhōngwén/Hànyǔ -- Chinese). A language or foreign language is counted with 门 (mén), never the generic 个. Example: 他会说三门语言,包括英语、法语和一点儿中文。(Tā huì shuō sān mén yǔyán, bāokuò Yīngyǔ, Fǎyǔ hé yìdiǎnr Zhōngwén.) -- He speaks three languages: English, French and a little Chinese.
Nationality, home and languages: three facts
是 + country + 人 states nationality; 住在 (zhù zài) + place states where you currently live (which may differ from nationality); 会说 (huì shuō) + language states which languages you speak. Keep the three distinct. Example: 我是德国人,可是我现在住在英国,会说德语和英语。(Wǒ shì Déguó rén, kěshì wǒ xiànzài zhù zài Yīngguó, huì shuō Déyǔ hé Yīngyǔ.) -- I am German, but I now live in the UK, and can speak German and English.
Final 了 marks study as still ongoing
Stating how long you have studied a language needs the ongoing-state pattern 学 + language + 已经 + duration + 了 (or verb-了 + duration + 了), which marks the learning as continuing into the present. Example: 我学中文已经两年了,现在还在继续学。(Wǒ xué Zhōngwén yǐjīng liǎng nián le, xiànzài hái zài jìxù xué.) -- I have already been learning Chinese for two years, and am still continuing now. Without the final 了 the sentence can sound like a finished, past episode.
Drawn from real examiner reports.
出国 (go abroad, verb) vs 国外 (abroad, place)
出国 (chūguó -- to go abroad) is a VERB (an action); 国外 (guówài -- abroad/overseas) is a PLACE noun, easily confused. Example: 我很想出国旅游,去国外看看不同的文化。(Wǒ hěn xiǎng chūguó lǚyóu, qù guówài kàn kan bùtóng de wénhuà.) -- I would love to go abroad to travel and see different cultures. Learn 出国 as the action and 国外 as the place you are in once abroad.
Digest: candidates repeatedly fail to understand "abroad" (and "climate"/"celebrate") in the international-world topic conversation, often needing the simplified alternative (s22 Topic 5, s23 Topic 6).
Missing the final 了 for ongoing study
了 after the verb alone marks a completed action; a SECOND 了 at the end marks a state still true now. ✗ 我学了两年中文。(sounds finished) ✓ 我已经学了两年中文了,现在还在学。(Wǒ yǐjīng xuéle liǎng nián Zhōngwén le, xiànzài hái zài xué.) -- I have been learning Chinese for two years and am still learning. Add the sentence-final 了 (or 还在 + verb) when the learning is ongoing.
Digest: 了/过/着 aspect-marker misuse is the most heavily documented grammar error, both sittings and every writing component, including mixed tenses where the time-frame cue demands a genuine marker (s22, s23).
学 (study) is not 会 (able to)
学 describes the ONGOING ACTION of studying, not the resulting ability; 会 (huì) states ability. ✗ 我学中文,所以我可以帮你翻译。✓ 我在学中文,可是我还不太会说。(Wǒ zài xué Zhōngwén, kěshì wǒ hái bú tài huì shuō.) -- I am learning Chinese, but I cannot really speak it well yet. ✓ 我学了三年中文了,现在会说一点儿了。(Wǒ xuéle sān nián Zhōngwén le, xiànzài huì shuō yìdiǎnr le.) 学 = the process; 会 = the resulting ability.
Wrong measure word for a language: 个 not 门
A language, like a course or subject, is an abstract skill-object counted with 门, not 个. ✗ 我在学一个新的外语。✓ 我在学一门新的外语。(Wǒ zài xué yì mén xīn de wàiyǔ.) -- I am learning a new foreign language. Learn the noun with its measure word as one chunk: 一门语言/一门外语/一门中文课 (a language / a foreign language / a Chinese course).
(general FL trap) -- measure-word misuse is a digest-named recurring error (s22, s23 grammar checklists); the specific 门 collocation is inferred.
比-comparison never takes 很
A 比-comparison never puts 很 (or 非常/太) before the adjective -- the comparison already carries the degree. ✗ 中文比法语很难。✓ 中文比法语难。(Zhōngwén bǐ Fǎyǔ nán.) -- Chinese is more difficult than French. To add degree, put 一点/得多 AFTER the adjective: 比法语难得多 (much harder).
Digest: comparison-with-比 misuse appears on the grammar-improvement checklist at multiple components, both sittings (s22, s23).
地 before a verb, not 得 (认真地练习)
得 marks a complement AFTER a verb; 地 marks a manner adverbial BEFORE a verb. Before a verb, use 地. ✗ 认真得练习 ✓ 认真地练习 (rènzhēn de liànxí) -- to practise conscientiously. The two are both pronounced de but do different jobs, so choosing by sound alone loses the mark.
Digest: 的/地/得 misuse recurs across writing components at both sittings (s22, s23).
Nationality is not where you live
是……人 states nationality; 住在…… states current residence -- they may be different facts and must not be merged. ✗ answering "你是哪国人?" with 我住在英国。✓ 我是德国人,可是我现在住在英国。(Wǒ shì Déguó rén, kěshì wǒ xiànzài zhù zài Yīngguó.) -- I am German, but I now live in the UK. Answer exactly the fact asked -- where FROM versus where NOW living are two different questions.
(general FL trap) -- the digest stresses answering the specific detail asked rather than a near-miss (Reading), but does not name this pair.
Five-step routine for a languages task
Cover every bullet: 1) nationality with 是……人; 2) where you now live if different, with 住在; 3) languages with 会说 + the measure word 门; 4) how long you have studied, with the ongoing 了 (我已经学中文两年了); 5) a reason or opinion with 因为. The reason earns the marks, not the facts.
Listening: link WHO to WHICH country
Country, nationality and language names are classic distractor-echo targets: a wrong option often names a country genuinely mentioned but attached to the wrong speaker. Track WHO is linked to WHICH country, rather than just recognising the country names you hear.
Speaking: give the reason, not just the fact
In the international-world topic conversation, be ready to explain WHY you value learning a language (interest, culture, a future job), not just WHAT languages you speak. Candidates handle the factual question but stall on the 为什么 follow-up -- add 因为……觉得…… every time.
This topic (Area E: The International World, E1) covers countries and nationalities, languages, where people are from and live, and learning Chinese and other languages, including opinions on the value of learning a language. It appears in listening and reading (vocabulary, gist and detail about people's backgrounds), functional and extended writing (an introduction message, an opinion article), and the speaking topic conversation about the international world.
