Ask a price: 多少钱 / 一共 / 便宜一点儿
Ask the price with 多少钱 (duōshǎo qián -- how much): 请问,这个多少钱?(Qǐngwèn, zhège duōshǎo qián?). Give a total with 一共 (yígòng -- altogether): 一共三十五块。(Yígòng sānshí wǔ kuài.). Negotiate politely rather than demanding: 可以便宜一点儿吗?(Kěyǐ piányi yìdiǎnr ma? -- could it be a bit cheaper?). A shop assistant may reply 打九折 (dǎ jiǔ zhé -- a 10% discount). Pay with 现金 (xiànjīn -- cash) or 信用卡 (xìnyòngkǎ -- credit card).
Shop-item measure words: 件/双/瓶/张/斤
Each noun pairs with a specific measure word, and shop items are full of them: 一件衬衫 (yí jiàn chènshān -- shirt), 一双鞋 (yì shuāng xié -- pair of shoes), 一瓶水 (yì píng shuǐ -- bottle of water), 一张邮票 (yì zhāng yóupiào -- stamp), 一斤苹果 (yì jīn píngguǒ -- 500g of apples). 例:我想买一件衬衫和一双鞋。(Wǒ xiǎng mǎi yí jiàn chènshān hé yì shuāng xié.) — a shirt and a pair of shoes. Never default to 个.
Polite request or complaint: 麻烦你 + 因为
Soften a request with 麻烦你 (máfan nǐ -- sorry to trouble you) or 请问, then state what you want with 可以……吗?(kěyǐ…ma? -- may I…?). Always give a reason with 因为 when returning or exchanging goods. 例:麻烦你,我想退这双鞋,因为质量不好。(Máfan nǐ, wǒ xiǎng tuì zhè shuāng xié, yīnwèi zhìliàng bù hǎo.) — I would like to return these shoes, because the quality is not good. At the post office: 我想寄一个包裹到英国,要多少钱?

便宜 (cheap) ≠ 贵 (expensive)
✗ Reading or hearing 这条裤子很便宜 and answering as if it said 贵 (expensive), or the reverse. ✓ Learn 便宜 (piányi -- cheap) and 贵 (guì -- expensive) as a fixed opposite pair and re-check which one appeared before answering a price question: 这件外套很贵,可是那件很便宜。(Zhè jiàn wàitào hěn guì, kěshì nà jiàn hěn piányi.) — This coat is expensive, but that one is cheap.

Pick 银行 out of near-synonym options
✗ Choosing a different place word instead of 银行 (yínháng -- bank) when the options look or sound similar. ✓ Learn 银行 with its neighbours 邮局 (yóujú -- post office) and 商店 (shāngdiàn -- shop) as a distinct, fixed set. 例:我想去银行取钱,然后去邮局寄一个包裹。(Wǒ xiǎng qù yínháng qǔqián, ránhòu qù yóujú jì yí gè bāoguǒ.) — withdraw money at the bank, then send a parcel at the post office.
(s23 P21 Q1)
One measure word per item, not 个
✗ 我想买一个衣服和一个鞋 (个 does not collocate with clothing or shoes). ✓ 我想买一件衣服和一双鞋。(Wǒ xiǎng mǎi yí jiàn yīfu hé yì shuāng xié.) — a piece of clothing and a pair of shoes. Learn each shop-item noun with its own measure word — 件 for clothing, 双 for pairs — rather than defaulting to 个. A wrong measure word is flagged on the Writing accuracy checklist.
(general FL trap)
Reading: lift the phrase, not the sentence
Reading short answers must give the precise detail, not a whole copied sentence — random lifting earns no credit. If a passage says 服务员打了九折,一共一百五十块 and the question asks the final price, answer 一百五十块, not the entire sentence. Find the exact phrase the question word points to and write only that.
(s23 P21 Q8)
A missing verb or subject reads as unclear
An answer that has the right content but drops the key verb or subject is judged ambiguous and loses the mark. e.g. for what she did about a faulty coat, answering just 换 (exchange) is too bare — write 她想换一件新的 (tā xiǎng huàn yí jiàn xīn de), keeping the subject and verb. Keep the grammatical element that makes the answer unambiguous.
(s23 P22 Q8)
Name the fault, not just 有问题
✗ 我想退货,因为有问题。(有问题 is too vague to show what is actually wrong.) ✓ 我想退这双鞋,因为鞋底松了 (…yīnwèi xiédǐ sōng le) or 因为质量不好 — name the specific fault: a hole 有一个洞, a loose sole 鞋底松了, or poor quality 质量不好. A specific problem earns Task Completion credit that a bare 有问题 does not.
(general FL trap)
个 is not a safe default measure word
Every countable Chinese noun has its own measure word, and shop items are full of exceptions to 个: clothing takes 件 (一件衣服), shoes/pairs take 双 (一双鞋), bottles take 瓶 (一瓶啤酒), flat items like stamps take 张 (一张邮票), and weight uses 斤 (一斤苹果). ✗ 我想买一个衣服。✓ 我想买一件衣服。(Wǒ xiǎng mǎi yí jiàn yīfu.) — a piece of clothing. Always learn a new noun together with its measure word.
Shopping task: item, measure word, then price
For a shopping or public-service task: name the item with its correct measure word (一件衬衫/一双鞋/一瓶水), ask the price with 多少钱, and if appropriate negotiate politely with 可以便宜一点儿吗. Total up with 一共 and state how you paid (现金/信用卡).
State the fault, then request politely
If reporting a problem, describe it specifically (质量不好/坏了/有一个洞), not just 有问题, then request a solution politely with 麻烦你/我可以……吗 (退货/换货), always giving a reason with 因为. Never sound demanding.
Reading: answer from the text, watch 便宜/贵
Answer price/place questions from the text, not a guessed opposite. 便宜 (cheap) and 贵 (expensive) are a fixed pair — re-check which one appeared before answering — and give the exact phrase the question word points to rather than lifting a whole sentence.
