Festival vocab; 送 (give) vs 收到 (receive)
Festival vocabulary names the occasion (春节 Chūnjié — Spring Festival, 中秋节 Zhōngqiūjié — Mid-Autumn Festival, 生日 shēngrì — birthday) plus its customs (庆祝 qìngzhù — celebrate, 团圆 tuányuán — reunion, 传统 chuántǒng — tradition). Giving a gift uses 送 (sòng), recipient straight after, no 给: 我送奶奶一份礼物 (Wǒ sòng nǎinai yí fèn lǐwù). Receiving uses a DIFFERENT verb, 收到 (shōudào), not 送 reversed: 我收到了一份礼物 (Wǒ shōudàole yí fèn lǐwù).
每年……都 (no 了) vs 去年……了
A repeated, every-year custom uses 每年……都…… (měinián…dōu…) and NO 了, because it describes a pattern, not a single event: 每年春节,我们都放鞭炮。(Měinián Chūnjié, wǒmen dōu fàng biānpào.) A specific past celebration takes 了 to mark that ONE event as completed: 去年春节,我们放了很多鞭炮。(Qùnián Chūnjié, wǒmen fàngle hěn duō biānpào.) 了 marks completion of a bounded event, not "past tense" in general.
Develop a festival opinion with 因为
A one-word opinion (很好玩 hěn hǎowán — "it is fun") states a view but gives no creditable detail. A developed opinion names the reason: 我最喜欢中秋节,因为我们全家人可以一起赏月、吃月饼。(Wǒ zuì xǐhuan Zhōngqiūjié, yīnwèi wǒmen quánjiā rén kěyǐ yìqǐ shǎngyuè, chī yuèbǐng.) — I like Mid-Autumn Festival the most, because my whole family can admire the moon together and eat mooncakes. The pattern 我最喜欢……,因为…… (wǒ zuì xǐhuan…, yīnwèi…) is reusable across any festival opinion task.
Drawn from real examiner reports.
No 了 in a 每年……都 festival custom
✗ 每年春节,我们都放了鞭炮。(了 wrongly kept with the habitual marker 每年……都……) ✓ 每年春节,我们都放鞭炮,也会去拜年。(Měinián Chūnjié, wǒmen dōu fàng biānpào, yě huì qù bàinián.) Keep 了 only for a specific, bounded past event (去年春节,我们放了很多鞭炮 is fine), never inside a 每年/都/常常 habitual statement.
了 aspect-marker misuse -- including 了 kept in a habitual/present context -- is the most documented grammar error across both sittings and every Writing component (s22, s23).
Bare 很好玩 festival opinion, no reason
✗ 我喜欢春节,春节很好玩。(no detail beyond "fun" — restates the question) ✓ 我喜欢春节,因为我们全家人可以团圆,一起包饺子、放鞭炮。(Wǒ xǐhuan Chūnjié, yīnwèi wǒmen quánjiā rén kěyǐ tuányuán, yìqǐ bāo jiǎozi, fàng biānpào.) Always follow an opinion word with 因为 and a specific, concrete reason.
Bare restatement earns no Task Completion credit -- the "there are many benefits of X" template failure (s22, s23 Key Messages); the same "explain WHY not WHAT" gap recurs in Speaking (s22 Topic 4; s23 Topics 1/3/4/5).
Whole cake 个, a cut slice 块
✗ 妈妈切了三个蛋糕给我们。(个 wrongly kept once the cake has been cut into pieces) ✓ 妈妈做了一个生日蛋糕,然后切成很多块。(Māma zuòle yí gè shēngrì dàngāo, ránhòu qiēchéng hěn duō kuài.) — Mum made a birthday cake, then cut it into many slices. 个 (gè) counts the whole cake as one object; once it is cut, each piece is counted with 块 (kuài). Match the measure word to the noun's state after an action.
Wrong measure words (量词) appear on the Writing common-error list at both sittings (s22, s23).
Do not confuse 送 (give) and 收到 (receive)
Giving and receiving use two DIFFERENT verbs, not one word reversed. 送 (sòng) is to give; 收到 (shōudào) is to receive. ✗ 奶奶送到了我一个红包。(收到 needed here) ✓ 奶奶送我一个红包,我收到了很开心。(Nǎinai sòng wǒ yí gè hóngbāo, wǒ shōudàole hěn kāixīn.) Track who gives and who receives before choosing the verb.
General FL trap (inferred, not tied to a specific examiner-report finding).
Match the time frame: 去年了 vs 明年打算
Use the time frame the task cues: a PAST memory takes 去年……了 (completed), a FUTURE plan takes 明年……打算/会 with NO 了. ✗ 明年春节我回了老家。(了 wrongly used for a future plan) ✓ 去年春节我回了老家;明年我打算再回去一次。(Qùnián Chūnjié wǒ huíle lǎojiā; míngnián wǒ dǎsuàn zài huíqù yí cì.) Mixing past and future cueing makes the reply ambiguous.
Using the wrong time frame for a task that explicitly cues past or future is the single most common Speaking-grammar error (s22 Card 6; s23 Topic 5).
着 marks a state, not 庆祝 in progress
着 (zhe) marks a continuous STATE attached to a verb (门开着 — the door is open), not an ongoing ACTIVITY like celebrating. An event verb such as 庆祝 takes 正在/在, not 着. ✗ 我们庆祝着春节。(着 is unnatural after an activity verb) ✓ 我们正在庆祝春节。(Wǒmen zhèngzài qìngzhù Chūnjié.) Reserve 着 for a persisting state or a manner accompanying another action (拿着礼物走进来 — walking in holding a gift).
Split a habitual custom from a memory
Describe a recurring custom with 每年……都…… and NO 了, then switch to 去年……了…… for one specific memory. Keeping the two apart shows control of aspect. Example: 每年春节我们都放鞭炮;去年我们还包了饺子。(Měinián Chūnjié wǒmen dōu fàng biānpào; qùnián wǒmen hái bāole jiǎozi.)
Name a specific custom, food or gift
Never stop at 很好玩/很热闹. Name at least one concrete custom, food or gift — 放鞭炮/吃月饼/送红包 — and add a reason with 因为. Example: 我喜欢中秋节,因为可以跟家人一起吃月饼、赏月。(Wǒ xǐhuan Zhōngqiūjié, yīnwèi kěyǐ gēn jiārén yìqǐ chī yuèbǐng, shǎngyuè.)
Compare festivals with 比 or 没有
To compare two festivals use 比 or A 没有 B + adjective (no 很 before the adjective in a 比-sentence), then give a justified preference. Example: 中秋节没有春节热闹,可是我更喜欢中秋节,因为比较安静。(Zhōngqiūjié méiyǒu Chūnjié rènao, kěshì wǒ gèng xǐhuan Zhōngqiūjié, yīnwèi bǐjiào ānjìng.)
This topic (Area B: Personal & Social Life, B4) covers birthdays and celebrations, Chinese and other festivals, how they are celebrated, food and customs, and giving/receiving gifts. It appears in listening and reading (festival vocabulary, customs, gist and detail), functional and extended writing (a thank-you message, a "my favourite festival" article), and the speaking role play (a festival scenario) and topic conversation (festivals and celebrations).
