Frequency adverbs go before the verb, no 了
Habitual leisure actions take a frequency adverb straight before the verb, with NO 了 -- there is no single completed event, only a repeated habit: 常常 (chángcháng -- often), 有时候 (yǒu shíhou -- sometimes), 很少 (hěn shǎo -- rarely), 从不 (cóng bù -- never). Example: 我周末常常打篮球,有时候也去游泳,可是很少看电视。(Wǒ zhōumò chángcháng dǎ lánqiú, yǒu shíhou yě qù yóuyǒng, kěshì hěn shǎo kàn diànshì.) — At weekends I often play basketball, sometimes go swimming, but rarely watch TV.
State likes with 喜欢/爱; compare with 比
Likes use 喜欢 (xǐhuan — to like) or the stronger 爱 (ài — to love) before a verb-object: 我喜欢弹吉他 (Wǒ xǐhuan tán jítā). To compare and justify a preference use 比 (bǐ) — no 很 before the adjective in a 比-sentence — or 比较喜欢……,因为…… (bǐjiào xǐhuan…, yīnwèi…). Example: 我觉得运动比看电视更有意思,因为运动可以让我交到新朋友。(Wǒ juéde yùndòng bǐ kàn diànshì gèng yǒu yìsi, yīnwèi yùndòng kěyǐ ràng wǒ jiāodào xīn péngyou.)
了 (a completed occasion) vs 过 (experience)
了 (le) marks a SPECIFIC completed occasion, usually with a time word: 上个周末我看了一部电影 (Shàng ge zhōumò wǒ kànle yí bù diànyǐng) — Last weekend I watched a film. 过 (guo) marks EXPERIENCE -- that something has ever happened, with no specific time needed: 我弹过吉他,可是没有弹过钢琴 (Wǒ tánguo jítā, kěshì méiyǒu tánguo gāngqín) — I have played the guitar before, but never the piano. They are not interchangeable: 过 answers "have you ever…?"; 了 answers "what did you do (then)?".
Drawn from real examiner reports.
Do not swap 吉他 (guitar) and 钢琴 (piano)
吉他 (jítā — guitar) and 钢琴 (gāngqín — piano) are both "played" with 弹, but the instrument noun itself must not be swapped. ✗ 把吉他说成钢琴。(naming the wrong instrument) ✓ 我姐姐会弹吉他,不会弹钢琴。(Wǒ jiějie huì tán jítā, bú huì tán gāngqín.) Always check which instrument the question names before answering.
Guitar vs. piano is a named confused Reading MCQ pair (s22 P21 Q1/Q5); a named instrument unrecognised is a Listening gap (s22 P11 Q25).
Bare 我喜欢X answer with no detail
A bare "I like X" restates the question — examiners want a concrete detail (which kind, how often) plus a genuine reason. ✗ 我喜欢运动。(too generic) ✓ 我很喜欢运动,尤其是游泳,因为游泳可以让我放松身心,也很健康。(Wǒ hěn xǐhuan yùndòng, yóuqí shì yóuyǒng, yīnwèi yóuyǒng kěyǐ ràng wǒ fàngsōng shēnxīn, yě hěn jiànkāng.) Always add a specific activity plus a reason.
Bare topic-word answers fail Task Completion -- the "there are many benefits of X" template failure (s22 Q3(a); s23 41/42/43 Key Messages).
Drop 了 on a completed past verb
A specific past leisure event needs 了 on EACH completed verb, not just the first. ✗ 上个周末我打了篮球,也看一个电影。(missing 了 on the second verb 看) ✓ 上个周末我打了篮球,也看了一部电影。(Shàng ge zhōumò wǒ dǎle lánqiú, yě kànle yí bù diànyǐng.) — Last weekend I played basketball, and also watched a film. Scan every completed verb in a past-occasion narrative for 了 before submitting.
了 aspect-marker misuse -- a missed past-tense 了 -- is the most documented grammar error across both sittings and every Writing component (s22, s23).
A film takes 部/场, never 个
A film takes the measure word 部 or 场, never the all-purpose 个. ✗ 我看了一个电影。(wrong measure word 个 before 电影) ✓ 我看了一部电影,也看了一场很精彩的比赛。(Wǒ kànle yí bù diànyǐng, yě kànle yì chǎng hěn jīngcǎi de bǐsài.) — I watched a film, and also watched an exciting match. Learn the specific measure word with each noun, and do not fall back on 个 for a counted object it does not fit.
Wrong measure words (量词) appear on the Writing common-error list at both sittings (s22, s23).
No 了 on a habitual 常常 statement
了 marks one completed event, so it must NOT appear on a habitual statement with a frequency adverb such as 常常/有时候. ✗ 我常常去了游泳。(了 wrongly added to a repeated habit) ✓ 我常常去游泳,有时候也去打网球。(Wǒ chángcháng qù yóuyǒng, yǒu shíhou yě qù dǎ wǎngqiú.) — I often go swimming, and sometimes play tennis too. Reserve 了 for a single bounded past occasion, never a repeated routine.
了 used where it does not belong -- e.g. in a present/habitual sentence -- is named on the grammar-improvement list (s23 P41).
Do not drop the verb 打/踢/弹
Sports and instruments need their action verb -- 打篮球/打网球, 踢足球, 弹吉他 -- and the verb must not be dropped. ✗ 我周末常常篮球。(missing the verb 打 before 篮球) ✓ 我周末常常打篮球,有时候踢足球。(Wǒ zhōumò chángcháng dǎ lánqiú, yǒu shíhou tī zúqiú.) — At weekends I often play basketball, and sometimes play football. Learn each activity as verb + noun together, never the bare noun.
General FL trap (inferred, not tied to a specific examiner-report finding).
过 and 了 are not interchangeable
过 and 了 are NOT interchangeable. 过 (guo) marks EXPERIENCE — something has ever happened, no specific occasion; 了 (le) marks a SPECIFIC completed occasion, usually with a time word. ✓ 我看过这部电影。(Wǒ kànguo zhè bù diànyǐng.) — ever, before. ✓ 我昨天看了这部电影。(Wǒ zuótiān kànle zhè bù diànyǐng.) — yesterday, a set occasion. "Have you ever…?" needs 过; "what did you do?" needs 了.
Listening: process the whole clause
A later clause often contradicts the first — a positive comment followed by a 但是 negative. Do not lock onto the first word you hear; process the whole sentence, because the wrong option is usually a true detail attached to the wrong idea.
Never stop at a bare activity name
Never stop after naming an activity. Task Completion needs the activity PLUS how often (a frequency adverb) PLUS a reason with 因为. Example: 我周末常常打篮球,因为可以跟朋友一起运动。(Wǒ zhōumò chángcháng dǎ lánqiú, yīnwèi kěyǐ gēn péngyou yìqǐ yùndòng.)
Check every verb for the right aspect
Scan each verb before submitting: a habitual statement (常常/每周) takes NO 了; a specific past occasion takes 了 on EVERY completed verb; a "have you ever" answer takes 过. Example: 上个周末我打了球,也看了一部电影。(Shàng ge zhōumò wǒ dǎle qiú, yě kànle yí bù diànyǐng.)
Compare with 比 — and drop 很
To compare two activities use 比 or 比较喜欢……,因为……, with NO 很 before the adjective in a 比-sentence. Give a genuine preference, not "both are good". Example: 我觉得运动比看电视更有意思。(Wǒ juéde yùndòng bǐ kàn diànshì gèng yǒu yìsi.)
This topic (Area B: Personal & Social Life, B3) covers hobbies and free-time activities, sport, music, films and TV, going out, how often and why, and opinions and preferences. It appears in listening and reading (activity and frequency vocabulary, opinions), functional and extended writing (describing a free-time activity, comparing two activities), and the speaking role play and topic conversation (talking about hobbies and preferences).
