Ex5: for + against + your own justified view
Ex5 = points for + points against + your own opinion with reasons, in 250-300 characters. Develop every point — state it, then give the reason with a connective: 有人认为学生应该多做课外活动,因为这可以帮助他们发展兴趣爱好,也能减轻学习压力。(Yǒurén rènwéi xuésheng yīnggāi duō zuò kèwài huódòng, yīnwèi zhè kěyǐ bāngzhù tāmen fāzhǎn xìngqù àihào, yě néng jiǎnqīng xuéxí yālì.) — more activities develop hobbies and ease study pressure. Never leave a point unexplained.
Vary connectives to link and contrast ideas
Top-band answers use VARIED connectives, not one repeated. Contrast — 虽然……但是…… (suīrán…dànshì…): 虽然打工可以让学生赚到零用钱,但是也可能影响学习。(Suīrán dǎgōng kěyǐ ràng xuésheng zhuàndào língyòngqián, dànshì yě kěnéng yǐngxiǎng xuéxí.) — a part-time job earns pocket money but can also harm study. Addition — 不但……而且…… (bú dàn…érqiě…). Balance — 一方面……另一方面…… (yì fāngmiàn…lìng yì fāngmiàn…). Conclusion — 因此 / 由此可见 (yīncǐ / yóu cǐ kě jiàn) to introduce your own view at the end.
Drawn from real examiner reports.
Restating the two stimulus comments
The stimulus gives two opinions to start you off; candidates who merely re-state them without adding NEW developed content stay in the middle bands. ✗ 有人说手机方便,有人说手机不好。我觉得手机有好也有不好。— bare restatement, no development or reason. ✓ ADD your own reasoning, a concrete example and a clear recommendation, using the stimulus only as a springboard.
Examiner digest S3: do not simply re-state the two stimulus comments; add your own developed ideas (s22 & s23 Q28).
Misreading the exact question
Ex5 questions are precisely worded; a misread gives an off-topic answer that cannot score well. Underline the EXACT issue, the two positions to cover, and what your view must address before writing — drifting to a related topic forfeits the for/against marks. ✓ open by restating the issue: 对于这个规定,看法不一。(duìyú zhège guīdìng, kànfǎ bùyī — opinions on this rule differ).
Examiner digest S3: candidates misinterpreted the prompt and argued the wrong topic or side (s22 Q28; s23 Q28).
No pinyin in the writing paper
Pinyin is NOT credited anywhere in Paper 1 writing — if you cannot recall a character, choose a simpler word you CAN write in characters rather than falling back to pinyin. ✗ 我觉得zhège wenti hen fuza. ✓ 我觉得这个问题很复杂。(Wǒ juéde zhège wèntí hěn fùzá.) — I think this issue is very complicated (characters only). It costs marks even when the idea is good.
Examiner digest cross-cutting: no pinyin in the writing paper, applies across Paper 1 Ex4/Ex5 (s22 & s23 Ex4).
Wrong register or missing format features
Match the format and register the task specifies. An article for the school magazine uses a slightly formal, impersonal tone (谈谈……, 笔者认为……) and needs a title; a letter to a friend is personal (亲爱的……, 你好!) with a greeting and sign-off. Getting the register wrong, or omitting required format features, loses marks — identify the text type first.
Examiner digest cross-cutting: match the specified format, audience and register (s22 & s23 Key messages).
Incomplete, imprecise simple sentences
Even strong candidates lose marks on imprecise SIMPLE structures: an incomplete sentence with incomplete meaning is not credited. Complete every clause and both halves of a paired connective — open with 虽然……, close with the 但是…… half. ✗ 虽然打工可以赚钱…… is unfinished; ✓ add 但是也会占用学习时间。(dànshì yě huì zhànyòng xuéxí shíjiān — but it also takes up study time). Get the basics right.
Examiner digest cross-cutting: imprecise simple structures and grammatically incomplete sentences are not credited (s22 Q10; s23 Q10).
Listing points without developing them
Naming an argument is not the same as making it. A bare list of points, with no explanation, stays in the lower bands. Attach a reason to every idea with a connective (因为……, 不但……而且……): state the point, say WHY, add a concrete example. Aim for two or three FULLY developed points per side, not a long undeveloped list — depth, not number, lifts the mark.
Examiner digest S3: develop ideas fully with connectives rather than listing them (s22 & s23 Q28).
Any 成语 automatically raises the mark
Learners memorise a few 成语 and force them in wherever possible, assuming any idiom shows "advanced language". In fact idioms help ONLY when used APPROPRIATELY — a misused one confuses the sentence and earns no credit; a plain, accurate sentence is safer. ✗ 学生打工,一箭双雕,可以赚钱也可以学习。— here 一箭双雕 is forced in and does not fit a formal article. Quality beats decoration.
Examiner digest S3: idioms and sayings help only when used appropriately (s22 & s23 Ex5) -- a sharp trap for candidates who memorise 成语 as a shortcut.
Read twice, then plan before you write
Read the question twice and underline the exact issue and the two positions you must cover — do not answer a nearby topic. Then jot 2-3 points FOR, 2-3 AGAINST, and your own view with a reason, in note form. Planning first stops you drifting into merely restating the stimulus.
Write in paragraphs with varied connectives
Structure four paragraphs: an opening that restates the issue, a "for" paragraph, an "against" paragraph, and a conclusion with your justified opinion. Link ideas with a RANGE of connectives — 虽然……但是…… (suīrán…dànshì…), 不但……而且……, 因此 — not the same 但是 or 而且 every time.
Final check: length, characters-only, format
Before finishing, check four things: is the answer 250-300 characters; is it written in characters only with NO pinyin; is it in the right format (an article needs a title, a letter needs a greeting and sign-off); and does every paragraph relate to the exact issue asked?
Exercise 5 is the final and most demanding task on Paper 1: an extended piece of writing of about 250-300 characters, worth 22 marks. You are given a short issue and two contrasting stimulus comments, and asked to write an article, letter or report that presents arguments for, arguments against, and your own justified view. It mainly tests AO2 Writing: organising ideas into coherent paragraphs (W2), using a range of structures and vocabulary (W3), accurate punctuation and characters (W4), and the right register/format for the audience (W5).
Contrast two points using 虽然……但是……: "Although daily exercise is good for health, it can also affect study time."
