Result complements: 完 / 懂 / 到
A result complement is a single character glued straight onto a verb to say what RESULT the action reached. 完 (wán, finish): 我吃完饭了。(Wǒ chīwán fàn le.) — I have finished eating. 懂 (dǒng, understand): 我听懂了老师的话。 — I understood what the teacher said. 到 (dào, achieve): 我找到钥匙了。 — I found the key. Without it, the bare verb (吃/听/找) says only that the action happened, not that it SUCCEEDED. Negatives use 没(有): 我没找到钥匙。 — I did not find the key.
Direction (上来/出去) and degree (得很/极了)
A direction complement attaches to a MOVEMENT verb to show which way it goes relative to the speaker: 上来 (shànglái, come up toward the speaker) — 请你上来。 — Please come up here. 出去 (chūqù, go out away) — 妹妹跑出去了。 — Little sister ran out. A degree complement attaches AFTER an adjective to intensify it (unlike 很/非常, which come before): 得很 — 这个电影好看得很 (hǎokàn de hěn) — really good; 极了 — 今天热极了 (rè jíle) — extremely hot.
Four comparisons: 比 / 没有 / 一样 / 更·最
比 (bǐ): A + 比 + B + adjective = A is MORE than B — 他比我高。 — He is taller than me. Add a degree AFTER the adjective for precision: 他比我大两岁。(Tā bǐ wǒ dà liǎng suì.) — two years older. 没有 (méiyǒu): A does NOT reach B — 我没有他高。 — not as tall as him. 跟…一样 (yíyàng): equal — 我跟他一样高。 — as tall as him. 更/最 (gèng/zuì) go straight before an adjective, without 比: 这个更好 — even better; 那个最好 — the best.

很/非常 before the adjective after 比
比 already means "more than", so 很 (hěn, very) or 非常 (fēicháng, extremely) must NOT be added before the adjective -- they double the intensity ungrammatically. ✗ 他比我很高。 ✓ 他比我高。(Tā bǐ wǒ gāo.) — He is taller than me. To show HOW MUCH more, add a degree phrase AFTER the adjective: 他比我高一点儿 (a little taller) or 他比我高得多 (much taller), never 很/非常 before it.

不比 is not the same as 没有
不比 (bù bǐ) means "is not more ... than" -- a close, roughly-equal comparison -- while 没有 (méiyǒu) means A does not reach B, i.e. "not as ... as". ✗ 我不比他高 for "I am not as tall as him". ✓ 我没有他高。(Wǒ méiyǒu tā gāo.) — I am not as tall as him (he IS taller). 我不比他高 instead hedges: "I am not necessarily taller than him". Pick the structure that matches the meaning.

Object splitting verb + result complement
A result complement (完/懂/到) must attach DIRECTLY to the verb, with no object in between; the object comes AFTER the verb+complement. ✗ 我做作业完了。(作业 wrongly splits 做 and 完.) ✓ 我做完作业了。(Wǒ zuòwán zuòyè le.) — I have finished my homework. The same holds for 找到, 听懂, 看到: verb + complement stays as one unit, then the object follows.
(s22 Q10; s23 Q10) precision in simple grammatical structures
没有 needs 那么, not 一点儿/得多
没有 comparisons take 那么 before the adjective, not the degree words that belong to 比 (一点儿, 得多). ✗ 我没有他高一点儿。 ✓ 我没有他那么高。(Wǒ méiyǒu tā nàme gāo.) — I am not as tall as him. Save 高一点儿 / 高得多 for 比 sentences (他比我高一点儿); with 没有, use 那么 to set the standard fallen short of.
(general FL trap)
找 vs 找到: bare verb loses "success"
A bare verb reports only that the action happened, not that it SUCCEEDED -- use a result complement when success is meant. ✗ 我找钥匙了。(only "I looked for the key".) ✓ 我找到钥匙了。(Wǒ zhǎodào yàoshi le.) — I found the key. Likewise 听 (listened) vs 听懂 (understood), 看 (looked) vs 看到 (saw). Leaving the complement off can lose the intended meaning.

得很/极了 go after the adjective
得很 and 极了 are degree complements that come AFTER the adjective, unlike 很/非常 which come before. Do not put them on the wrong side. ✗ 今天得很热。 ✗ 极了热。 ✓ 今天热极了。(Jīntiān rè jíle.) — Today is extremely hot. ✓ 这个电影好看得很 (hǎokàn de hěn) — this film is really good. Pick one intensifier and put it on the correct side of the adjective.

Comparative 没有 read as "not have"
Learners first meet 没有 as the negative of "to have" (我没有钱 — I do not have money) and assume it can ONLY mean that, so 我没有他高 confuses them. WRONG: in a comparison, A + 没有 + B + adjective is a FIXED pattern meaning "A does not reach B's level of [adjective]", i.e. "not as ... as" -- not possession here. ✓ 我没有他高。(Wǒ méiyǒu tā gāo.) — I am not as tall as him (he is taller).
Check verbs for a needed complement
When drafting, check each verb: does it need a result complement to show it SUCCEEDED (完/懂/到), glued directly with the object AFTER, not between? And does a movement verb need a direction complement (上来/出去) to show which way relative to you the speaker?
Pick the right comparison pattern
For any comparison, pick the right pattern: 比 for "more than" (NO 很/非常 before the adjective; put the degree after), 没有 for "not as ... as" (那么 before the adjective), 跟…一样 for "the same as". A quick check stops the commonest slip -- 很 sneaking in after 比.
Intensifier position: before vs after
For extra intensity, decide WHERE the intensifier sits: 很/非常 go BEFORE the adjective, but the degree complements 得很/极了 go AFTER it. Mixing the two sides is a common, easily-spotted error, so put exactly one intensifier on the correct side.
A complement is extra information glued directly onto a verb or adjective to say more precisely what happened: did the action succeed (result complement), which way did it go (direction complement), or how intense is a quality (degree complement)? A comparison sentence lets you directly compare two people or things. Together these structures let you move beyond bare SVO sentences into precise, exam-level Chinese.
Which result complement means "finished" (an action fully completed)? Give an example.
填空,选择正确的结果补语(完/懂/到): (1)我吃( )饭了,我们走吧。 (2)老师说得很清楚,我都听( )了。 (3)我找了很久,终于找( )钥匙了。
