One sound de, three characters: 的/地/得
的, 地 and 得 are all pronounced "de" but are three DIFFERENT characters, each fixed by POSITION. 的 links a describing word to a NOUN after it: 漂亮的花 (piàoliang de huā, a beautiful flower). 地 links one to a VERB after it, saying HOW the action is done: 慢慢地走 (mànmàn de zǒu, walk slowly). 得 comes straight after a verb and gives the DEGREE or RESULT: 跑得很快 (pǎo de hěn kuài, runs very fast). Quick test: a noun after "de" → 的, a verb after → 地, a verb before → 得.
Verb+object? Repeat the verb before 得
得 always attaches directly to a VERB, never to a noun. So to add a degree/result complement to a verb+object phrase such as 打篮球 (dǎ lánqiú, play basketball) or 说汉语 (shuō Hànyǔ, speak Chinese), you must REPEAT the verb before 得: 他打篮球打得很好。(Tā dǎ lánqiú dǎ de hěn hǎo.) — He plays basketball very well. ✗ 他打篮球得很好 is wrong, because 得 would attach to the noun 篮球, not a verb.
Three-question self-test for choosing de
Before writing "de", ask: (1) NOUN right after? → 的 (有趣的电影, an interesting film). (2) VERB right after, word before it = manner? → 地 (高兴地说, say happily). (3) "de" right after a verb, giving degree/result? → 得 (说得很清楚, speak clearly). Run it on a sentence: 她认真地复习功课,复习得很仔细,是一个认真的学生。(Tā rènzhēn de fùxí gōngkè, fùxí de hěn zǐxì, shì yí gè rènzhēn de xuésheng.) — one 地, one 得, one 的.

Attributive 的 before a verb (高兴的说)
When a word describes HOW an action is done, it needs adverbial 地 before the verb, not attributive 的. ✗ 她高兴的说谢谢你。 ✓ 她高兴地说谢谢你。(Tā gāoxìng de shuō xièxie nǐ.) — She happily said thank you. Here 高兴 describes the MANNER of 说 (saying), so 地 is required. They sound identical, so examiners check the right character is written.

的 after a verb instead of complement 得 (跑的很快)
Putting 的 straight after a verb when the following words give the DEGREE or RESULT is wrong -- that job belongs to 得. ✗ 他跑的很快。 ✓ 他跑得很快。(Tā pǎo de hěn kuài.) — He runs very fast. ✗ 她跳舞跳的很好看。 ✓ 她跳舞跳得很好看。(Tā tiàowǔ tiào de hěn hǎokàn.) — She dances very beautifully. 的 would wrongly treat 很快 / 很好看 as if they described a noun, which they do not.

No repeated verb before 得 (他打篮球得很好)
When the verb has its own object (打篮球, 说汉语, 写汉字), 得 must still attach to a VERB, so the verb has to be repeated. ✗ 他打篮球得很好。(得 wrongly attaches to the noun 篮球.) ✓ 他打篮球打得很好。(Tā dǎ lánqiú dǎ de hěn hǎo.) — He plays basketball very well. Dropping the repeated verb leaves the sentence grammatically incomplete, with no verb for 得 to attach to.
(s22 Q10; s23 Q10) grammatical completeness
Writing pinyin de instead of 的/地/得
In the writing paper (Paper 1) you must write the CHARACTER, not pinyin: the wrong 的/地/得 is a character-accuracy error, and a pinyin "de" is not credited at all. ✗ 他跑de很快 (pinyin de). ✓ 他跑得很快。(Tā pǎo de hěn kuài.) — He runs very fast. A pinyin "de" is only ever tolerated in the Listening paper, never in writing.
(s22 & s23 Ex4) no pinyin in the writing paper
Dropping 的 before a noun (有意思书)
When a descriptive phrase comes before a noun, do not drop the linking 的. ✗ 这是一本有意思书。 ✓ 这是一本有意思的书。(Zhè shì yì běn yǒuyìsi de shū.) — This is an interesting book. 有意思 describes the noun 书, so 的 must join them. Two-syllable and longer descriptions especially need 的; leaving it out makes the phrase ungrammatical.
(general FL trap)
地 and 得 on the wrong side of the verb
地 and 得 sit on opposite sides of the verb: 地 comes BEFORE the verb (manner), 得 comes AFTER it (degree/result). Do not swap their positions. ✗ 他说地很清楚。 ✗ 他高兴得说。 ✓ 他说得很清楚。(Tā shuō de hěn qīngchu.) — He speaks very clearly. ✓ 他高兴地说。(Tā gāoxìng de shuō.) — He speaks happily. Check what sits either side of the verb before choosing.

The three "de" (的/地/得) are interchangeable
Because all three sound like "de", learners assume any one will do since a reader still gets it. WRONG: they are three separate characters, each with a fixed position (的 noun, 地 verb, 得 after a verb), and the exam marks the wrong one wrong even when the meaning is clear. ✗ 他跑的很快 for 他跑得很快: only 得 fits after 跑, because 很快 is the degree of running, not a noun.
Proofread every "de" you write
After drafting a sentence, check every "de": is the next word a noun (的), a verb describing manner (地), or does "de" sit right after a verb, giving degree or result (得)? Fixing these on a second read catches the most avoidable accuracy marks at this level.
Decide fast: look either side of "de"
One glance at the neighbours settles almost every case. A noun immediately after → 的 (好看的花). A verb immediately after, word before it = manner → 地 (慢慢地走). A verb immediately before "de" → 得 (走得很慢).
Repeat the verb; write the character
Two habits that save marks. With a verb+object phrase, repeat the verb before 得: 说汉语说得很流利, never 说汉语得很流利. And in the writing paper write the actual character 的/地/得 -- a pinyin "de" earns nothing. Both are easy, high-frequency losses.
的, 地 and 得 are all pronounced "de", but they are three different characters with three different, FIXED jobs. Which one you need depends entirely on what comes right before and right after it -- never on meaning or sound.
Which "de" goes before a NOUN (attributive)? Give an example.
填空,选择正确的字(的/地/得): (1)这是一件很漂亮( )衣服。 (2)妹妹高兴( )跳了起来。 (3)弟弟跑( )非常快。
