Precise cuisine and flavour vocabulary
菜系 (càixì, cuisine) covers 川菜 (Chuāncài, Sichuan) and 粤菜 (Yuècài, Cantonese); pair it with the exact taste words 辣 (là, spicy), 甜 (tián, sweet), 咸 (xián, salty), 酸 (suān, sour), 清淡 (qīngdàn, light) and 油腻 (yóunì, greasy) rather than a vague good/bad. Example: 川菜以辣出名,粤菜的口味比较清淡。(Chuāncài yǐ là chūmíng, Yuècài de kǒuwèi bǐjiào qīngdàn.) — Sichuan cuisine is famous for being spicy; Cantonese tastes comparatively light. The full vocabulary tables live in the study note.
Comparing cuisines: 比, 没有…那么, 一样
Comparisons suit 比: A比B+adjective (+多了/一点儿) for a difference, A没有B那么+adjective for the reverse, and A跟B一样+adjective for a similarity. Example: 川菜比粤菜辣多了,但是粤菜没有川菜那么油腻。(Chuāncài bǐ Yuècài là duōle, dànshì Yuècài méiyǒu Chuāncài nàme yóunì.) — Sichuan cuisine is much spicier than Cantonese, but Cantonese is not as greasy. The degree word after 比 is 多了/一点儿/更, never 很/非常 before the adjective.
Trying new food with 了 and 过 (negate 没)
Trying a new dish uses the experiential 过 (guò, have ever done) and change-of-state 了 for the moment you finally tried it; negate experience with 没(有), never 不. Example: 我以前没吃过臭豆腐,昨天第一次尝了。(Wǒ yǐqián méi chīguò chòu dòufu, zuótiān dì-yī cì cháng le.) — I had never eaten stinky tofu before, and yesterday I tried it for the first time. 过 marks the experience of having done something; 了 marks that a new state has been reached — neither is an English past-tense marker.
Drawn from real examiner reports.
Vague 好吃 instead of a precise taste word
Flavour marks turn on the exact taste word, not a broad good/bad adjective. ✗ 这道菜很好吃。(no specific taste named) ✓ 这道菜有点辣,但是不油腻。(Zhè dào cài yǒudiǎn là, dànshì bù yóunì.) — This dish is a little spicy, but not greasy. A bare 好吃/不好吃 does not show the specific taste (辣, 清淡, 油腻) that a flavour question needs.
Precise key words: a near-synonym or a vaguer word instead of the required term lost the mark (s23 Ex1 Q3/Q5; s22 Ex1 Q1/Q4).
Reason vs result of trying a dish
Asked WHY someone hesitated to try a dish, weaker candidates give what happened afterwards (the 结果) instead of the cause (原因). ✗ Q: 他为什么担心?A: 后来他吃了两碗米饭。(that is the result) ✓ 因为他平常习惯吃清淡的家常菜,很少吃辣的。(Yīnwèi tā píngcháng xíguàn chī qīngdàn de jiāchángcài, hěn shǎo chī là de.) — Because he was used to light home cooking and rarely ate spicy food. Always separate 原因 from 结果.
Reason vs result: candidates gave the consequence instead of the cause (s23 Q13; s22 Q11).
很/非常 wrongly added after 比
比 already means "more than", so 很/非常 cannot sit directly before the adjective — degree is shown with 多了, 一点儿 or 更. ✗ 川菜比粤菜很辣。 ✓ 川菜比粤菜辣多了。(Chuāncài bǐ Yuècài là duōle.) — Sichuan cuisine is much spicier than Cantonese cuisine. This is exactly the imprecise use of a simple structure that loses marks even for otherwise strong candidates.
The digest names avoiding 很/非常 with 比 as a comparison rule (G5) but no numbered report item evidences it (general FL trap).
Flipping the subject in a 没有…那么 rewrite
Rewriting A比B辣多了 as a 没有……那么 sentence reverses the roles, becoming B没有A那么辣. Learners keep the original order and flip the meaning. ✗ 川菜没有粤菜那么辣。(now says Sichuan is the milder one) ✓ 粤菜没有川菜那么辣。(Yuècài méiyǒu Chuāncài nàme là.) — Cantonese cuisine is not as spicy as Sichuan cuisine. Track which cuisine is the subject in each pattern.
Comparison-transformation subject error (general FL trap); not a numbered examiner-report item.
Copying a passage instead of your own words
In reading, weaker candidates copy a whole sentence — including irrelevant clauses — instead of selecting the exact point and re-expressing it. A lifted answer with extra or wrong material is not credited, even when it contains the right point. On a food passage, name the precise reason or opinion in your own words rather than transcribing the sentence around it.
Lifting: copying a passage sentence instead of selecting and re-expressing the point is not credited (s22 Q9/Q13/Q14; s23 Q9/Q12).
Answering a near-miss version of a bullet
In the functional email a common lost mark is answering a near version of a bullet rather than the exact one asked — e.g. describing a dish you often eat when the bullet asks about a NEW dish you tried, or giving the price when it asks the taste. Read each bullet and answer precisely what it requests, covering all of them.
Functional writing: answering a near version of a bullet instead of the exact prompt loses the mark (s23 Q27).
了 after trying food just means past tense
Learners treat 了 as a past-tense ending. 了 marks completion or a change of state: it is dropped with habitual actions (每天/常常), and 过 (not 了) says you have EVER done something. ✗ 我每天吃了辣的东西。 ✓ 我以前没吃过辣的东西,昨天第一次吃了一口。(Wǒ yǐqián méi chīguò là de dōngxi, zuótiān dì-yī cì chī le yì kǒu.) — I never ate spicy food before; yesterday I tried a bite. 了 marks the one-off act, not tense.
Aspect (了/过) is a syllabus-rewarded second-language trap the digest grounds as G3 without a numbered report item (general FL trap).
个 as the default measure word for a dish
Learners over-rely on 个 as a catch-all. In fact 道 (dào) is the measure word for a dish or course, and 个 does not collocate with 菜 here. ✗ 妈妈今天做了三个菜。 ✓ 妈妈今天做了三道菜。(Māma jīntiān zuò le sān dào cài.) — Mum made three dishes today. Like 一本书 or 一杯茶, 一道菜 is a fixed collocation, not interchangeable with 个.
Measure-word collocation is imprecise use of a simple structure, which loses marks even for strong candidates (s22 Q10; s23 Q10).
Functional email routine (Ex4)
For the ~8-mark email (100-120 characters): answer every bullet exactly (where and what you tried; how it tasted vs your usual food; whether you recommend it), match the email register, and write in characters ONLY — no pinyin.
Extended article routine (Ex5)
For the ~22-mark article (250-300 characters) on whether traditional cuisine is disappearing: give BOTH sides, develop each with a connective (虽然……但是……, 除了……以外), then add your own justified view — do NOT just repeat the stimulus comments.
Discuss food culture maturely (speaking)
In the speaking conversation, treat food culture as an issue: discuss whether trying new foods matters for understanding a culture — both sides, with a justified opinion — rather than only listing what you like to eat. Natural, spontaneous answers score above rehearsed lists.
This topic (Area D: Cultural Diversity, D3) covers regional and national cuisines, dishes and cooking styles, food culture and eating habits, trying different foods, and forming opinions about it. It appears in reading and listening (vocabulary, opinions), functional + extended writing, and the speaking conversation. Remember: in the writing paper, write in characters only -- no pinyin.
