传统 vs 习俗/风俗 vs 礼仪, not vague 文化
传统 (chuántǒng, tradition) is something handed down; 习俗 (xísú) and 风俗 (fēngsú) are specific CUSTOMS a community practises (拜年); 礼仪 (lǐyí) is the ETIQUETTE around an occasion (greeting an elder). Naming the exact term, not the vague 文化 (culture), earns the vocabulary mark. Example: 拜年是一个重要的习俗,见到长辈要先问好,这也是礼仪。(Bàinián shì yí gè zhòngyào de xísú, jiàn dào zhǎngbèi yào xiān wènhǎo, zhè yě shì lǐyí.) -- Paying New Year visits is a custom; greeting elders first is etiquette.
Argue over change: 虽然…但是…, 不管…都…
Arguing that a tradition still matters as times change needs a concession-then-point structure: 虽然 + [old-fashioned aspect] + 但是 + [why it still matters]; or 不管 + [however things change] + 都 + [what must not be lost]. Example: 虽然有些习俗看起来有点古老,但是它们能帮助我们了解自己的文化。(Suīrán yǒuxiē xísú kànqǐlái yǒudiǎn gǔlǎo, dànshì tāmen néng bāngzhù wǒmen liǎojiě zìjǐ de wénhuà.) -- Although some customs look old-fashioned, they help us understand our own culture.
Compare with 比/更/最 -- never 很 by 比
Talking about change needs comparison: 年轻人比长辈更容易接受新的生活方式 uses 比 + 更 correctly. A common error is adding 很 next to 比: ✗ 年轻人比长辈很容易接受新事物. Example: 我觉得传承文化比遵守规矩更重要。(Wǒ juéde chuánchéng wénhuà bǐ zūnshǒu guījǔ gèng zhòngyào.) -- I think passing down culture is more important than simply following the rules. Show degree with 更/一点/得多, never with 很 or 非常 sitting next to 比.

Copying the passage, not re-expressing
When a passage explains WHY a custom is kept, weaker candidates copy the whole sentence instead of the key reason. Re-express it: 因为这个习俗能让家人聚在一起,所以奶奶一直坚持下去。(Yīnwèi zhège xísú néng ràng jiārén jù zài yìqǐ, suǒyǐ nǎinai yìzhí jiānchí xiàqù.) -- Because this custom gathers the family, grandma keeps it up. A copied answer with extra material can invalidate a correct point.
Lifting vs re-expressing -- s22 Q9/Q13/Q14; s23 Q9/Q12
的/地/得 confused describing how
Describing customs often needs an adverbial before a verb (地) or a complement after a verb (得), and candidates default to 的. ✗ 奶奶高兴的讲了这个习俗的由来。✓ 奶奶高兴地讲了这个习俗的由来。(Nǎinai gāoxìng de jiǎng le zhège xísú de yóulái.) -- Grandma happily told the story of this custom's origin. 的 = attributive before a noun, 地 = adverbial before a verb, 得 = complement after a verb.
Precision in simple structures -- s22 Q10; s23 Q10
Wrong register or ignoring the format
A task may ask for a diary, an email, or a school-magazine article -- each has its own tone and layout. Match the tone and layout the task names. ✓ 校刊文章应该用比较正式、有条理的语气,并加上标题。(Xiàokān wénzhāng yīnggāi yòng bǐjiào zhèngshì, yǒu tiáolǐ de yǔqì, bìng jiā shàng biāotí.) -- A magazine article should use a fairly formal, organised tone with a title.
Register & writing conventions -- s22 & s23 Key messages
Vague 文化 instead of a named custom
Saying only 我家很有文化 (my family is very cultured) is too vague to score; name the specific custom or etiquette. ✗ 我家很有文化。✓ 我家每年春节都会祭拜祖先,这是一个重要习俗。(Wǒ jiā měi nián Chūnjié dōu huì jìbài zǔxiān, zhè shì yí gè zhòngyào xísú.) -- Every Spring Festival my family worships our ancestors; this is an important custom. A precise, named custom earns the mark; a vague phrase does not.
Precise key words -- s23 Ex1 Q3/Q5; s22 Ex1 Q1/Q4
REASON a custom started vs its RESULT
Asked WHY a custom began, weaker candidates give the later result, not the original cause. ✗ A: 后来全家人更常聚在一起。(a result) ✓ 因为以前家里穷,买不起月饼,只能自己做,慢慢变成了传统。(Yīnwèi yǐqián jiā li qióng, mǎi bù qǐ yuèbǐng, zhǐ néng zìjǐ zuò, mànmàn biàn chéng le chuántǒng.) -- Because the family was once poor and made their own mooncakes, it became a tradition. Keep 原因 apart from 结果.
Reason vs result -- s23 Q13; s22 Q11
Writing pinyin in the Paper 1 writing
In the Paper 1 writing (Ex4/Ex5) candidates are reminded NOT to use pinyin -- only characters are credited, so writing 习俗 as "xísú" earns nothing. Pinyin is tolerated only as a substitute for a character in the LISTENING answers, where it must be unambiguous. If unsure of a character such as 礼仪, choose a simpler word you can write correctly.
Do not use pinyin in the writing paper -- s22 & s23 Ex4
A custom can change form yet keep meaning
Do not argue that a custom is either unchanged or lost. A custom can change form while its MEANING survives. ✓ 虽然过节的方式跟以前不一样,但是家人团聚、互相尊重的意义没有改变。(Suīrán guòjié de fāngshì gēn yǐqián bù yíyàng, dànshì jiārén tuánjù, hùxiāng zūnzhòng de yìyì méiyǒu gǎibiàn.) -- Although celebrating differs from before, the meaning of family reunion and mutual respect is unchanged.
Develop beyond a black-and-white stimulus -- s22 & s23 Q28
很 cannot sit next to 比
Learners add 很 or 非常 next to 比 thinking it intensifies the comparison, but 比 already expresses it and cannot take 很/非常 before the adjective. ✗ 年轻人比长辈很容易接受新习惯。✓ 年轻人比长辈更容易接受新习惯。(Niánqīngrén bǐ zhǎngbèi gèng róngyì jiēshòu xīn xíguàn.) -- Young people find it easier than elders to accept new habits. Show degree with 更/一点/得多, never 很 next to 比.
Comparatives (G5) -- s23 Ex2e; s22 Ex2
Ex4 note: precise custom, characters only
For the functional email/diary (Ex4, 100-120 characters) about a family custom: answer each bullet exactly (what the custom is, how your family practises it, how you feel), name it with a precise term (习俗/仪式), match the format and register, and write in characters ONLY.
Ex5: both sides on change, then your view
For the extended article (Ex5, 250-300 characters) on whether traditions should stay the same or change: present BOTH views, develop each with a connective (虽然……但是……, 不管……都……), then give your own justified view -- not a restated stimulus opinion.
Speaking: does the meaning survive change?
Treat customs maturely in speaking -- discuss whether a custom's MEANING survives as its form changes, not just how it is performed. Give both sides and justify your view; a rehearsed monologue is marked down. Do not repeat presentation content -- bring new language.
Get simple structures exactly right
Even strong candidates drop marks on imprecise simple structures. Before reaching for complex language, make each sentence complete and accurate: check 的/地/得, keep 很 away from 比, and finish every clause. An incomplete sentence with incomplete meaning is not credited.
This topic (Area D: Cultural Diversity, D2) covers customs and traditions in Chinese-speaking communities and elsewhere, etiquette and practices, why traditions matter, and how they change over time, plus forming opinions about them. It appears in reading and listening (vocabulary, opinions), functional + extended writing, and the speaking conversation. Remember: in the writing paper, write in characters only -- no pinyin.
