除夕 vs 春节 vs 假期: keep them apart
The exam rewards the precise festival term. 除夕 (chúxī) is New Year's Eve -- the last night of the old year, when families eat the reunion dinner 年夜饭; 春节 (Chūnjié) is the Spring Festival itself, New Year's Day and the days after; 假期 (jiàqī) just means "time off" and names no tradition. Example: 除夕晚上吃年夜饭,春节那天去拜年。(Chúxī wǎnshang chī niányèfàn, Chūnjié nà tiān qù bàinián.) -- On New Year's Eve we eat the reunion dinner; on Spring Festival day we pay New Year visits.
Compare festivals: 跟…相比, 不但…而且, 除了…以外
Comparing a Chinese festival with your own culture, or one festival with another, is core here, and a few connectives do the work: 跟……相比 (gēn…xiāngbǐ, compared with…); 不但……,而且…… (búdàn…, érqiě…, not only…but also…); 除了……以外 (chúle…yǐwài, besides…). Example: 跟圣诞节相比,春节不但更热闹,而且团聚的时间更长。(Gēn Shèngdànjié xiāngbǐ, Chūnjié búdàn gèng rènao, érqiě tuánjù de shíjiān gèng cháng.) -- Compared with Christmas, the Spring Festival is not only livelier, but reunion time is also longer.
Add significance (意义/象征), not just facts
Naming festivals and customs (春节, 月饼, 拜年) earns only basic marks; higher marks come from saying what a custom means 意义 (yìyì) or symbolises 象征 (xiàngzhēng), and giving a justified view on whether it should be kept 保留 (bǎoliú) or is fading 消失 (xiāoshī). Example: 对我来说,中秋节的意义不只是吃月饼,更是家人团聚。(Duì wǒ láishuō, Zhōngqiūjié de yìyì bù zhǐ shì chī yuèbǐng, gèng shì jiārén tuánjù.) -- For me, the meaning of the Mid-Autumn Festival is not just eating mooncakes, but family reunion.
Drawn from real examiner reports.
Vague 节日/假期 instead of the exact festival
Festival questions reward the EXACT term. Answering only 节日 (a festival) or 假期 (a holiday) does not identify which one; the precise name (春节, 中秋节, 端午节) is required, and 除夕 (the eve) is not interchangeable with 春节. ✗ 我们家过节的时候很开心。(too vague -- which festival?) ✓ 我们家过春节的时候很开心。(Wǒmen jiā guò Chūnjié de shíhou hěn kāixīn.) -- My family is happy at Spring Festival.
Precise key words -- s23 Ex1 Q3/Q5; s22 Ex1 Q1/Q4
REASON a custom is kept vs its RESULT
Asked WHY a family follows a festival custom, weaker candidates give a consequence ("so we watched the Gala") instead of the belief behind it. ✗ A: 后来全家一起看了春节晚会。(a result) ✓ 因为爷爷说一起包饺子能让全家感情更亲近。(Yīnwèi yéye shuō yìqǐ bāo jiǎozi néng ràng quánjiā gǎnqíng gèng qīnjìn.) -- Because grandpa says making dumplings together brings the family closer. Separate 原因 from 结果.
Reason vs result -- s23 Q13; s22 Q11
传统 (tradition) vs 传说 (legend)
传统 (chuántǒng, tradition) and 传说 (chuánshuō, legend) sound almost identical and share 传, but a CUSTOM you do (贴春联, 赛龙舟) is a 传统, while a STORY explaining a festival's origin is a 传说. ✗ 中秋节的传统是嫦娥奔月。✓ 中秋节的传说是嫦娥奔月,赏月才是传统。(Zhōngqiūjié de chuánshuō shì Cháng'é bēn yuè, shǎngyuè cái shì chuántǒng.) -- The LEGEND is Chang'e flying to the moon; moon-viewing is the actual tradition.
Character accuracy, same-pinyin near-forms -- s22 & s23 Listening
Writing pinyin in the Paper 1 writing
In the Paper 1 writing (Ex4/Ex5) candidates are reminded NOT to use pinyin -- only characters are credited, so writing a festival name as "Chūnjié" earns nothing. Pinyin is tolerated only as a substitute for a character in the LISTENING answers, where it must be unambiguous. If unsure of a character such as 粽子, choose a simpler festival word you can write correctly.
Do not use pinyin in the writing paper -- s22 & s23 Ex4
很 wrongly inside a 比 comparison
A 比 comparison cannot take 很 or 非常 before the adjective. ✗ 春节比圣诞节很热闹。✓ 春节比圣诞节更热闹。/ 春节比圣诞节热闹得多。(Chūnjié bǐ Shèngdànjié gèng rènao. / …rènao de duō.) -- The Spring Festival is (much) livelier than Christmas. Show degree with 更/得多/一点, never 很/非常. This surfaces constantly when comparing festivals across cultures.
Comparatives (G5); precision in simple structures -- s22 Q10; s23 Q10; s23 Ex2e
了 added to a habitual 每年 custom
了 marks a single completed event, so it clashes with a habitual marker like 每年都 describing a repeated custom. ✗ 我们每年除夕都吃了饺子。(habitual + 了) ✓ For a repeated custom drop 了: 我们每年除夕都吃饺子。(Wǒmen měi nián chúxī dōu chī jiǎozi.) But for one finished occasion 了 is needed: 去年除夕我们吃了饺子。(Qùnián chúxī wǒmen chī le jiǎozi.) -- Last New Year's Eve we ate dumplings.
Aspect not tense (G3) -- general FL trap
除夕 and 春节 are not the same day
Learners often treat 除夕 (chúxī) and 春节 (Chūnjié) as two names for one day. In fact 除夕 is NEW YEAR'S EVE -- the last night of the old year, when the reunion dinner 年夜饭 happens -- while 春节 is the Spring Festival, New Year's Day and the days after. ✗ 除夕就是春节。✓ 除夕是春节的前一天晚上。(Chúxī shì Chūnjié de qián yì tiān wǎnshang.) -- New Year's Eve is the night before the Spring Festival.
Festival terminology -- general FL trap
Shared customs ≠ shared meaning (圣诞节)
圣诞节 (Shèngdànjié, Christmas) is celebrated in China with gifts and decorations, but for most people it is a popular commercial occasion, not a traditional festival like 春节 -- shared customs do not mean shared significance. ✓ 圣诞节不是传统节日,重要性比不上春节。(Shèngdànjié bú shì chuántǒng jiérì, zhòngyàoxìng bǐ bú shàng Chūnjié.) -- Christmas matters less than Spring Festival.
Treat topics maturely, not surface facts -- s22 & s23 Speaking
Speaking: title first, link to culture
In the speaking presentation, state the title first, then relate the content clearly to Chinese culture or a Chinese-speaking community, and add your own opinion, not only facts. Do not copy source material -- it reads as stilted and must be your own words.
Ex4 email: every bullet, characters only
For the functional email/diary (Ex4, 100-120 characters): answer each bullet exactly -- which festival, the activities/food, its personal significance -- match the format and a friendly register, and write in characters ONLY (no pinyin). A near-miss bullet loses the mark.
Ex5: both sides on tradition, then your view
For the extended article (Ex5, 250-300 characters) on whether traditional festivals still matter: present BOTH the "still matter" and "commercialised" views, develop each with a connective (虽然……但是……, 因为……所以……), then give your own justified conclusion -- not a restated stimulus.
Comparing celebrations: use 跟…相比
To compare a Chinese festival with your own culture, use 跟……相比 and keep it clean (no 很/非常 by 比). A widely celebrated festival (like 圣诞节 in China) may not carry the same significance there -- say so, rather than assuming shared customs mean shared meaning.
This topic (Area D: Cultural Diversity, D1) covers Chinese and other festivals, how they are celebrated, the food and customs associated with them, and comparing celebrations across cultures with your own opinions. It appears in reading and listening (vocabulary, opinions), functional + extended writing, and the speaking presentation and conversation -- speaking tasks on this theme should link clearly to Chinese culture or life in a Chinese-speaking community. Remember: in the writing paper, write in characters only -- no pinyin.
