Name the material and category, not 环保
Recycling vocabulary centres on 垃圾分类 (lājī fēnlèi, waste sorting), 可回收 (kě huíshōu, recyclable) vs 不可回收 (bù kě huíshōu, non-recyclable), and materials 塑料 (sùliào, plastic), 玻璃 (bōli, glass), 纸张 (zhǐzhāng, paper), 金属 (jīnshǔ, metal) — name the material and category, not a vague word. Example: 塑料瓶、玻璃瓶和纸张都是可回收垃圾;剩菜和纸巾是不可回收垃圾。(Sùliàopíng, bōlipíng hé zhǐzhāng dōu shì kě huíshōu lājī; shèngcài hé zhǐjīn shì bù kě huíshōu lājī.)
把 for sorting/disposing: 把垃圾分类
Recycling actions do something specific TO a specific object, which is what 把 is for: 把 + definite object + verb + result/complement. Example: 我们应该把可回收的垃圾拿去回收站,把不可回收的垃圾扔进垃圾桶。(Wǒmen yīnggāi bǎ kě huíshōu de lājī ná qù huíshōuzhàn, bǎ bù kě huíshōu de lājī rēng jìn lājītǒng.) — We should take recyclable rubbish to the recycling station and throw non-recyclable rubbish into the bin. 把 needs a definite object (可回收的垃圾, a batch already identified), not a bare general noun.
个人 + 社区 action: 不但…而且…, 除了…以外
Recycling questions expect BOTH what a person does at home and what a community/school organises, linked with 不但……而且…… and 除了……以外,还……. Example: 个人不但可以在家做好垃圾分类,而且可以随身携带环保袋;除了个人行动以外,社区还可以举办回收活动。(Gèrén búdàn kěyǐ zài jiā zuò hǎo lājī fēnlèi, érqiě kěyǐ suíshēn xiédài huánbǎo dài; chúle gèrén xíngdòng yǐwài, shèqū hái kěyǐ jǔbàn huíshōu huódòng.) — An individual can sort rubbish at home and also carry an eco-bag; besides individual action, the community can hold recycling events.
Drawn from real examiner reports.
Vague 环保 for a specific habit
Recycling comprehension and speaking marks turn on the exact key word, not a broad adjective. ✗ 我们家很环保。(太笼统)✓ 我们家会把可回收的垃圾分类,然后拿去回收站。(Wǒmen jiā huì bǎ kě huíshōu de lājī fēnlèi, ránhòu ná qù huíshōuzhàn.) — Our family sorts recyclable rubbish and takes it to the recycling station. The vague 环保 alone does not show the specific action the question wants.
Digest (precise key words): the exact term scores, a vaguer word loses the mark (s23 Ex1 Q3/Q5; s22 Ex1 Q1/Q4).
Reason vs result: 原因 not 结果
When asked why a family or community started recycling, candidates give what happened afterwards instead of the cause. ✗ A: 后来邻居们把垃圾分开放了。(结果)✓ 因为附近的垃圾处理厂快装不下垃圾了,所以社区举办了环保活动。(Yīnwèi fùjìn de lājī chǔlǐchǎng kuài zhuāng bú xià lājī le, suǒyǐ shèqū jǔbàn le huánbǎo huódòng.) — Because the nearby waste plant was nearly full. Separate 原因 from 结果.
Digest (reason vs result): candidates gave the consequence instead of the cause (s22 Q11; s23 Q13).
Incomplete 把 sentence (我把垃圾。)
把 always needs a full verb phrase with a result or complement after the object — never the object alone. ✗ 我把垃圾。(动词缺失)✓ 我把垃圾拿去回收站了。(Wǒ bǎ lājī ná qù huíshōuzhàn le.) — I took the rubbish to the recycling station. A 把 sentence that stops after the object is grammatically incomplete with incomplete meaning, exactly the kind of structure that is not credited.
Digest (grammatical completeness): incomplete sentences with incomplete meaning are refused (s22 Q10; s23 Q10).
Lifting the passage, not own words
In a recycling reading passage, copying a whole sentence — with its irrelevant clauses — is not credited, and extra wrong material can cancel a correct point. Select the precise point and re-express it in your own words. ✗ copying 邻居们更愿意把塑料瓶和纸张分开放,垃圾也少了. ✓ answer only what is asked: 社区的垃圾明显减少了。(Shèqū de lājī míngxiǎn jiǎnshǎo le.) — The community's rubbish clearly decreased.
Digest (lifting vs re-expressing): copying whole passage sentences is not credited; select and re-express (s22 Q9/Q13/Q14; s23 Q9/Q12).
Pinyin in the writing paper
The writing paper (Ex4, Ex5) requires characters only — pinyin is never credited, even for a hard word. ✗ 我们应该做好lājī fēnlèi。 ✓ 我们应该做好垃圾分类。(Wǒmen yīnggāi zuò hǎo lājī fēnlèi.) — We should sort our rubbish well. If unsure of a character, choose a simpler word you know in characters rather than writing pinyin.
Digest (no pinyin in the writing paper): candidates are reminded not to use pinyin in Ex4/Ex5 (s22 & s23 Ex4).
No 了 with habitual 每天
了 marks a completed or changed action, so it clashes with a habitual action marked by 每天 (every day). ✗ 我每天都扔了垃圾到楼下。 ✓ 我每天都把垃圾扔到楼下的垃圾桶。(Wǒ měitiān dōu bǎ lājī rēng dào lóuxià de lājītǒng.) — Every day I throw the rubbish into the bin downstairs. Drop 了 for a routine; keep it only for a specific completed event (昨天我把垃圾扔了).
(general FL trap) Aspect-particle precision is a broadly rewarded second-language skill, not a numbered report item.
Any bin is not 垃圾分类
Learners assume 环保 means putting rubbish out of sight, not separating it by category. In fact 垃圾分类 requires putting recyclable and non-recyclable rubbish into DIFFERENT bins. ✗ 把垃圾都丢进垃圾桶就是垃圾分类。 ✓ 垃圾分类要求把可回收和不可回收的垃圾分开放,而不是全部丢进同一个桶。(Lājī fēnlèi yāoqiú bǎ kě huíshōu hé bù kě huíshōu de lājī fēnkāi fàng, ér bú shì quánbù diū jìn tóng yí gè tǒng.)
Digest flags precise key words and grammatical completeness as recurring traps, not this exact confusion (general FL trap).
把 is required, not optional word order
Learners treat 把 as a free stylistic choice, not a structure fronting a specific, definite object. 我垃圾分类了 is not idiomatic — 分类 is already a verb-object compound (分 + 类), so it resists taking 垃圾 as a second object without 把. ✗ 我垃圾分类了。 ✓ 我把垃圾分类了。(Wǒ bǎ lājī fēnlèi le.) — I sorted the rubbish. 把 is required whenever a specific object is sorted or disposed of.
Digest (grammatical completeness, G1/G7): an inaccurate sentence with incomplete meaning was refused (s22 Q10; s23 Q10).
Ex4 functional email routine
Functional email (Ex4, 100-120 characters) describing a recycling activity: answer each bullet exactly (what the activity is and why, what you personally did, one change you would like); match the email register; characters ONLY, no pinyin.
Ex5 extended article: weigh both sides
Extended article (Ex5, 250-300 characters) on recycling responsibility: present BOTH sides, develop each with a connective (虽然……但是……, 除了……以外), then give a justified view — do not restate the stimulus. Opener: 环保主要靠个人,还是社区和政府?(Huánbǎo zhǔyào kào gèrén, háishi shèqū hé zhèngfǔ?)
Reading/speaking: precise word + maturity
Name the precise action or material (垃圾分类, 可回收, 资源), not a vague 很环保, and give the cause when asked WHY. In speaking, treat the topic maturely — argue whether individual action really makes a difference — not just how you sort rubbish at home.
This topic (Area C: The World, C5) covers recycling and reusing, sorting waste, saving resources, and individual and community action, plus forming opinions about it. It appears in reading and listening (vocabulary, opinions), functional + extended writing, and the speaking conversation. Remember: in the writing paper, write in characters only -- no pinyin.
