有/没有: say what your town has and lacks
Use "place + 有/没有 + a PRECISE noun" to say what your town does and does not have — name the exact amenity (图书馆 túshūguǎn library, 超市 chāoshì supermarket, 体育中心 tǐyù zhōngxīn sports centre), never a vague word. Example: 我的家乡不大,但是有一个很大的公园、一家超市和一个图书馆,可是没有电影院。(Wǒ de jiāxiāng bú dà, dànshì yǒu yí gè hěn dà de gōngyuán, yì jiā chāoshì hé yí gè túshūguǎn, kěshì méiyǒu diànyǐngyuàn.) — My hometown is not big, but it has a park, a supermarket and a library, though no cinema.
在 vs 离 vs 附近/对面: locate precisely
在 states WHERE something is (X 在 Y); 离 states the DISTANCE between two points and needs a degree word (X 离 Y 很近/很远); 附近 (nearby), 对面 (opposite) and 旁边 (next to) are NOUNS that follow 在 to form a location phrase, not standalone verbs. Example: 图书馆在超市对面,离我家不远,走路只要五分钟。(Túshūguǎn zài chāoshì duìmiàn, lí wǒ jiā bù yuǎn, zǒulù zhǐyào wǔ fēnzhōng.) — The library is opposite the supermarket, not far from my home, a five-minute walk away.
Directions as a chain: 一直走/往…转/过了…就到了
Give directions step by step in COMPLETE sentences: 一直走 (go straight), 到 + landmark + 往左/右转 (turn left/right at a landmark), 过了 + landmark + 就到了 (pass it and you arrive). Example: 从车站出来,一直走,过了红绿灯往右转,走两分钟就到图书馆了。(Cóng chēzhàn chūlái, yìzhí zǒu, guò le hónglǜdēng wǎng yòu zhuǎn, zǒu liǎng fēnzhōng jiù dào túshūguǎn le.) — From the station, go straight, turn right after the lights, and reach the library. Note 过 is the VERB "to pass" (了 = step done), not the experiential particle.
Drawn from real examiner reports.
Vague 那个地方 for a named landmark
Home-town and directions marks turn on the exact key word, not a vague substitute. If a route passes 十字路口 (shízì lùkǒu, crossroads), an answer that only says 到那里往左转 (turn left there) without naming it loses precision. ✗ 到那个地方往左转。(太笼统) ✓ 到十字路口往左转。(Dào shízì lùkǒu wǎng zuǒ zhuǎn.) — Turn left at the crossroads. Precision earns the mark; vagueness does not.
Digest (precise key words): the exact term scores, a vaguer word loses the mark (s23 Ex1 Q3/Q5; s22 Ex1 Q1/Q4).
Direction fragments with no verb
Even simple direction instructions must be grammatically complete, with a verb present — a bare fragment leaves the meaning incomplete and is not credited. ✗ 往左,公园。(没有动词) ✓ 一直往左走,就能看到公园。(Yìzhí wǎng zuǒ zǒu, jiù néng kàndào gōngyuán.) — Keep walking left and you will see the park. Every step needs its own complete verb phrase (一直走 / 往左转 / 过了……就到了).
Digest (grammatical completeness): incomplete sentences with incomplete meaning are refused (s22 Q10; s23 Q10).
Pinyin in the writing paper
The writing paper (Ex4 functional, Ex5 extended) requires characters only — pinyin is never credited there, even for a hard place name. ✗ 我家附近有一个túshūguǎn。 ✓ 我家附近有一个图书馆。(Wǒ jiā fùjìn yǒu yí gè túshūguǎn.) — There is a library near my home. If you are unsure of a character, choose a simpler word you know in characters rather than falling back on pinyin.
Digest (no pinyin in the writing paper): candidates are reminded not to use pinyin in Ex4/Ex5 (s22 & s23 Ex4).
Wrong measure word: 座/条/家
Town features each take their own measure word, not the default 个. A bridge is 一座桥 (yí zuò qiáo), a street 一条街 (yì tiáo jiē), a shop 一家商店 (yì jiā shāngdiàn). ✗ 图书馆前面有一个桥。 ✓ 图书馆前面有一座桥。(Túshūguǎn qiánmiàn yǒu yí zuò qiáo.) — There is a bridge in front of the library. 座 is for solid structures, 条 for long narrow things, 家 for shops; 个 for everything reads as imprecise.
(general FL trap) Measure-word precision is a broadly rewarded second-language skill, not a numbered report item.
在 (location) vs 离 (distance) mixed
在 and 离 are not interchangeable. 在 gives a LOCATION (X 在 Y 对面/旁边); 离 gives a DISTANCE and needs a degree word (X 离 Y 很近/很远). ✗ 超市离银行对面。 ✓ 超市在银行对面,离我家很近。(Chāoshì zài yínháng duìmiàn, lí wǒ jiā hěn jìn.) — The supermarket is opposite the bank and close to my home. Do not put 对面/旁边 after 离, and do not use 在 with 很近/很远.
Digest (precision in simple structures): imprecise basic structures lose marks (s22 Q10; s23 Q10).
Lifting the passage, not own words
In a home-town reading passage, copying a whole sentence — with its irrelevant clauses — is not credited, and extra wrong material can cancel a correct point. Select the exact point and re-express it in your own words. ✗ copying 那里很安静,风景也很美,很多人都喜欢去. ✓ answer only what is asked: 因为那里很安静。(Yīnwèi nàlǐ hěn ānjìng.) — Because it is quiet there.
Digest (lifting vs re-expressing): copying whole passage sentences is not credited; select and re-express (s22 Q9/Q13/Q14; s23 Q9/Q12).
附近 is a noun (vicinity), not a verb
Learners carry over English "near" and drop 附近 into a sentence as if it were a verb. In fact 附近 is a NOUN meaning "the vicinity" — it must follow 在 (在……附近) or another noun (图书馆附近, near the library). ✗ 我家附近图书馆。 ✓ 我家在图书馆附近。(Wǒ jiā zài túshūguǎn fùjìn.) — My house is near the library. Distance is better with 离: 我家离图书馆很近。(Wǒ jiā lí túshūguǎn hěn jìn.)
(general FL trap) Digest flags precision in simple structures as broadly rewarded, not a numbered report item.
Use 有 not 是 for what a place has
Learners translate "our town has a library" through the English copula and reach for 是 instead of 有. 是 EQUATES or CLASSIFIES ("A is B"); 有 states EXISTENCE or POSSESSION ("A has B"). ✗ 我们镇是一个很大的图书馆。 ✓ 我们镇上有一个很大的图书馆。(Wǒmen zhèn shang yǒu yí gè hěn dà de túshūguǎn.) — Our town has a large library. Reserve 是 for classifying: 那是一个很有名的博物馆。
(general FL trap) Digest flags basic-verb precision as broadly rewarded, not a numbered report item.
Ex4 functional email routine
Functional email (Ex4, 100-120 characters) on your home town: evaluate the town; list 1-2 precise amenities with 有; give directions to ONE named place with the 一直走 / 往……转 / 过了……就到了 chain in complete sentences; add one thing to do; characters ONLY, no pinyin.
Ex5 extended article: weigh both sides
Extended article (Ex5, 250-300 characters) on your home town: weigh advantages AND disadvantages, develop each with a connective (虽然……但是……, 除了……以外), then give a justified view — do NOT restate the stimulus. Opener: 我的家乡适合年轻人生活吗?(Wǒ de jiāxiāng shìhé niánqīngrén shēnghuó ma?)
Reading/listening: precise word + word class
Give the precise landmark/amenity word (十字路口, 图书馆), not a vague 那个地方. In a gap-fill, read the frame before and after the gap and supply the required WORD CLASS (a noun, or a verb such as 转), and do not repeat a word already printed in the sentence.
This topic (Area C: The World, C3) covers describing your home town and local area, places and amenities, giving directions, what there is to do, and forming an opinion about your home town. It appears in reading and listening (vocabulary, following a route), functional + extended writing, and the speaking conversation. Remember: in the writing paper, write in characters only -- no pinyin.
