Precise transport, ticket, holiday words
Travel rewards the exact word, not a vague 车 (chē, vehicle): high-speed train 高铁 (gāotiě), subway 地铁 (dìtiě), single ticket 单程票 (dānchéngpiào), return ticket 来回票 (láihuípiào), passport 护照 (hùzhào), luggage 行李 (xíngli). Naming the exact transport or document scores in reading, listening and speaking. Example: 我们打算坐高铁去上海,然后住在一家离外滩很近的酒店。(Wǒmen dǎsuàn zuò gāotiě qù Shànghǎi, ránhòu zhù zài yì jiā lí Wàitān hěn jìn de jiǔdiàn.) The full list is in the note.
过 for experience, 了 for a set trip
Keep the aspect particles apart. 去过 (qù guo) reports a life experience with no fixed time: 我去过日本两次。(Wǒ qù guo Rìběn liǎng cì.) — I have been to Japan twice. 去了 (qù le) reports a SPECIFIC completed trip, usually with a time word: 我上个月去了日本,玩了五天。(Wǒ shàng ge yuè qù le Rìběn, wán le wǔ tiān.) — Last month I went to Japan for five days. Use 过 for "have you ever…", 了 for a specific past holiday.
Sequence a plan; give directions
Sequence with 先……然后…… (xiān…, ránhòu…, first…, then…) and use precise direction words: 一直走 (yìzhí zǒu, go straight), 往左/右拐 (wǎng zuǒ/yòu guǎi, turn left/right), 过马路 (guò mǎlù, cross the road), 在……附近 (zài…fùjìn, near…). Example: 你先一直走,然后在第二个路口往右拐,车站就在银行对面。(Nǐ xiān yìzhí zǒu, ránhòu zài dì èr ge lùkǒu wǎng yòu guǎi, chēzhàn jiù zài yínháng duìmiàn.) — First go straight, then turn right at the second junction; the station is opposite the bank.
Drawn from real examiner reports.
Lifting a passage instead of selecting
Asked what a travel notice or itinerary says, weaker candidates copy a whole sentence — including irrelevant clauses — instead of the precise point. Select and re-express: 游客必须在出发前三天办好签证。(Yóukè bìxū zài chūfā qián sān tiān bàn hǎo qiānzhèng.) — arrange the visa before departure. A copied answer with extra or wrong material can cancel an otherwise-correct point.

Vague 车/票 for the precise word
Reading and listening answers need the exact term. ✗ 我们坐车去北京。(车 could be any vehicle) ✓ 我们坐高铁去北京。(Wǒmen zuò gāotiě qù Běijīng.) — We take the high-speed train to Beijing. ✗ 我买了票。 ✓ 我买了一张来回机票。(Wǒ mǎi le yì zhāng láihuí jīpiào.) — I bought a return plane ticket. Learn the precise noun (高铁, 机票), not a vague catch-all.
(s23 Ex1 Q3/Q5; s22 Ex1 Q1/Q4)
很/非常 before a 比 adjective
比 comparisons must not carry 很 or 非常 before the adjective — degree goes after it. ✗ 飞机比火车很贵。 ✓ 飞机比火车贵得多。(Fēijī bǐ huǒchē guì de duō.) — The plane is much more expensive than the train. Or 飞机比火车贵一点。(Fēijī bǐ huǒchē guì yìdiǎn.) — a little more expensive. Use 得多/一点/多了 after the adjective, never 很/非常 before it.
(s22 Q10; s23 Ex2e)
Wrong verb for the vehicle (坐/骑/开)
Match the verb to the vehicle: 坐 (zuò) for a vehicle you sit inside (train, bus, plane), 骑 (qí) for one you straddle (bike, motorbike), 开 (kāi) for driving, 走(路) for on foot. ✗ 我骑火车去北京。 ✓ 我坐火车去北京。(Wǒ zuò huǒchē qù Běijīng.) — I take the train to Beijing. ✓ 我骑自行车上学。(Wǒ qí zìxíngchē shàngxué.) — I ride a bike to school.
(s22 Q10; s23 Q10)
Pinyin in the writing paper
In Paper 1 writing (Ex4/Ex5) pinyin earns no credit — write characters. A travel note written in pinyin (gāotiě, hùzhào) scores nothing for content; it must be 高铁, 护照. Pinyin is tolerated only in listening answers as a substitute for a forgotten character. Draft in characters from the start.
(s22/s23 Ex4)
Homophone slip: 玩 vs 完
A wrong character that changes meaning loses the mark. 玩 (wán, to play/have fun) and 完 (wán, to finish) share the same pinyin AND tone but differ in meaning. ✗ 我们在北京完了三天。 ✓ 我们在北京玩了三天。(Wǒmen zài Běijīng wán le sān tiān.) — We had fun in Beijing for three days. Write the character whose meaning you intend; mind homophones.
(s22/s23 Listening)
过 = experience, 了 = a specific event
过 (guo) reports a general EXPERIENCE with no fixed time — it answers "have you ever…": 我去过泰国。(Wǒ qù guo Tàiguó.) 了 (le) reports a SPECIFIC completed action, usually with a time word: 我去年去了泰国。(Wǒ qùnián qù le Tàiguó.) ✗ 我去年去过泰国 (过 clashes with 去年). ✓ 我去年去了泰国,玩得很开心。(Wǒ qùnián qù le Tàiguó, wán de hěn kāixīn.) 过 and 了 answer different questions and are not swappable.
(general FL trap)
很/非常 cannot intensify a 比 comparison
Learners transfer the ordinary 很 + adjective (很贵, very expensive) into a 比 comparison, producing the wrong 飞机比火车很贵. In a 比 sentence degree goes AFTER the adjective, not by 很/非常 before it: 飞机比火车贵得多 (guì de duō, much more expensive) or 飞机比火车更贵 (gèng guì, using 更 not 很). ✗ 坐地铁比坐出租车很方便。 ✓ 坐地铁比坐出租车方便得多。(Zuò dìtiě bǐ zuò chūzūchē fāngbiàn de duō.)
(s23 Ex2e; s22 Ex2)
Functional travel note (Ex4): checklist
For the functional travel note (Ex4, ~8 marks, 100-120 characters): name the exact destination and transport; give ONE specific reason; sequence with 先……然后……; cover every bullet; write in characters only, no pinyin.
Travel debate article: both sides
For the Ex5 travel debate (independent vs group travel; pros and cons of tourism), plan for-and-against with connectives, use 过 for experience and 了 for a specific trip, keep 比 right (no 很/非常), then give a justified conclusion — do not restate the question.
Open with a framing line
A strong opener frames the topic: 说到旅行,我一直觉得目的地和交通方式一样重要。(Shuōdào lǚxíng, wǒ yìzhí juéde mùdìdì hé jiāotōng fāngshì yíyàng zhòngyào.) — Speaking of travel, I have always felt the destination and the mode of transport matter equally. Then develop both sides and a personal view.
This topic (Area C: The World, C2) covers means of transport, travelling and holidays, buying tickets and directions, and travel experiences, preferences and opinions. It appears in reading and listening (itineraries, ticket information, directions), functional + extended writing (a note about a trip, an article on travel), and the speaking presentation/conversation. Remember: in the writing paper, write in characters only -- no pinyin.
