Precise city vs countryside vocabulary
Use precise terms, not a vague word. City: 城市 (chéngshì, city), 交通 (jiāotōng, transport), 方便 (fāngbiàn, convenient), 热闹 (rènao, bustling). Countryside: 农村 (nóngcūn, countryside), 空气新鲜 (kōngqì xīnxiān, fresh air), 安静 (ānjìng, quiet), 污染 (wūrǎn, pollution). Example: 城市的交通很方便,可是空气污染比较严重;农村空气新鲜,但是生活不太方便。(Chéngshì de jiāotōng hěn fāngbiàn, kěshì kōngqì wūrǎn bǐjiào yánzhòng; nóngcūn kōngqì xīnxiān, dànshì shēnghuó bú tài fāngbiàn.) Full list in the note.
Balanced advantage/disadvantage frames
The topic is comparative, so build listing/comparison patterns: 优点是……,缺点是…… (yōudiǎn shì…, quēdiǎn shì…, the advantage is…, the disadvantage is…), 除了……以外,还…… (chúle…yǐwài, hái…, apart from…, also…), A 比 B + 形容词. Example: 住在城市的优点是工作机会多,缺点是房租很贵;住在农村的优点是环境安静,缺点是娱乐设施比较少。(Zhù zài chéngshì de yōudiǎn shì gōngzuò jīhuì duō, quēdiǎn shì fángzū hěn guì; zhù zài nóngcūn de yōudiǎn shì huánjìng ānjìng, quēdiǎn shì yúlè shèshī bǐjiào shǎo.)
Describe where you live; narrate a move
Describe where you live with 我住在…… (wǒ zhù zài…) plus a location and a short judgement; narrate a move with 从……搬到…… (cóng…bān dào…) plus a time word and 了 for the completed change. Example: 我从小在城市长大,去年我们全家搬到了郊区,那里比市中心安静得多。(Wǒ cóng xiǎo zài chéngshì zhǎngdà, qùnián wǒmen quán jiā bān dào le jiāoqū, nàlǐ bǐ shìzhōngxīn ānjìng de duō.) Here 了 marks the completed change (the move), not "past tense".
Drawn from real examiner reports.
Vague word for the precise key term
Urban/rural comprehension marks turn on the exact key word, not a broad substitute. If the cause of noise is 交通堵塞 (jiāotōng dǔsè, traffic jam), an answer that only says 地方很吵 (the place is noisy) without the cause loses the mark. ✗ 城市不太好,因为很吵。 ✓ 城市交通堵塞,噪音很大,让人不舒服。(Chéngshì jiāotōng dǔsè, zàoyīn hěn dà, ràng rén bù shūfu.) — traffic jams and loud noise are uncomfortable.
(s23 Ex1 Q3/Q5; s22 Ex1 Q1/Q4)
Reason vs result of a move
Asked WHY a family moved, weaker candidates give what happened afterwards (so now they grow vegetables) instead of the cause. ✗ 他们为什么搬到农村?答:后来他们种了很多蔬菜。(a result) ✓ 因为爸爸觉得城市太吵、压力太大,所以他们搬到了农村。(Yīnwèi bàba juéde chéngshì tài chǎo, yālì tài dà, suǒyǐ tāmen bān dào le nóngcūn.) — because dad found the city too noisy and stressful. Separate 原因 from 结果.
(s23 Q13; s22 Q11)
很/非常 in a 比 comparison
Comparing city and countryside is a natural use of 比 (bǐ), but the adjective must NOT take 很 (hěn) or 非常 (fēicháng). For degree use 更 (gèng), 一点 (yìdiǎn) or 得多 (de duō). ✗ 农村比城市很安静。 ✓ 农村比城市更安静。(Nóngcūn bǐ chéngshì gèng ānjìng.) — even quieter. ✓ 城市的生活节奏比农村快得多。 — much faster.
(s23 Ex2e)
Pinyin in the writing paper
In Paper 1 writing (Ex4/Ex5) pinyin earns no credit — write characters. A description of your area written in pinyin (chéngshì, nóngcūn) scores nothing for content; it must be 城市, 农村. Pinyin is tolerated only in listening answers as a substitute for a forgotten character. Draft in characters from the start.
(s22/s23 Ex4)
Answering a near-miss of the bullet
Functional-writing marks are lost when a candidate answers a NEAR version of a bullet, not the exact one — describing a friend's town when asked about their OWN, or giving an advantage when a change is asked for. List each bullet (描述你的地方/一个优点/想改变的一件事) and answer every one exactly as set.
(s23 Q27)
Repeating the stimulus in Ex5
In the extended article (Ex5) on city vs countryside, copying back the two given comments does not build an argument. Add your OWN reasons and link them: 虽然农村娱乐设施少,但是……;因为……所以……. Develop points (cost, health, job chances) and reach a justified view rather than restating the prompt.
(s22/s23 Q28)
了 marks completion, not past tense
Learners treat 了 as a past-tense switch and attach it to routines. In fact 了 marks COMPLETION or a CHANGE OF STATE, not tense, and is not used with habitual actions marked by 每天 (měitiān) or 常常 (chángcháng). ✗ 他每天开车去了城市上班。 ✓ 他每天开车去城市上班。(Tā měitiān kāichē qù chéngshì shàngbān.) 了 is right only for a one-off event: 他昨天开车去了城市。(Tā zuótiān kāichē qù le chéngshì.)
(general FL trap)
Countryside has real advantages too
An immature idea: the city is "obviously" better, so an answer only lists what the countryside lacks. The exam rewards a BALANCED view: the countryside has real advantages (空气新鲜, 安静, 生活压力小) and the city real disadvantages (污染, 交通堵塞, 生活费用高). 虽然农村的娱乐设施比较少,但是空气新鲜、生活压力也比较小。(Suīrán nóngcūn de yúlè shèshī bǐjiào shǎo, dànshì kōngqì xīnxiān, shēnghuó yālì yě bǐjiào xiǎo.)
(s22/s23 Speaking)
Functional email (Ex4): the checklist
For the functional email describing where you live (Ex4, ~8 marks, 100-120 characters): answer each bullet exactly — what your area is like, one advantage, one change you want; match format and register; write in characters only, no pinyin.
Extended article: both settings
For the Ex5 article on city vs countryside, present BOTH settings' pros and cons, develop each with a connective (因为……所以……, 虽然……但是……, 除了……以外), then give your own justified view — do not just repeat a stimulus comment.
Open with the framing question
A crisp opener frames the debate: 到底住在城市好,还是住在农村好?(Dàodǐ zhù zài chéngshì hǎo, háishi zhù zài nóngcūn hǎo?) — Is it actually better to live in the city or the countryside? Then answer with reasons on both sides and a personal conclusion.
This topic (Area C: The World, C1) covers city vs countryside living, the advantages and disadvantages of each, describing where you live, moving between the two settings, and forming a balanced opinion. It appears in reading and listening (vocabulary, opinions), functional + extended writing, and the speaking conversation. Remember: in the writing paper, write in characters only -- no pinyin.
