Precise device + action vocabulary
Give the exact noun + verb collocation, not a vague 用手机 (yòng shǒujī, use the phone). Learn: 智能手机 (zhìnéng shǒujī, smartphone), 发短信 (fā duǎnxìn, send a text), 微信 (Wēixìn, WeChat), 视频通话 (shìpín tōnghuà, video call), 社交媒体 (shèjiāo méitǐ, social media). Example: 我每天用微信跟同学聊天。(Wǒ měitiān yòng Wēixìn gēn tóngxué liáotiān.) — I chat with classmates on WeChat daily. Fuller lists stay in the note.
Now vs before: 以前…现在…, 比
Built on CONTRAST — before smartphones versus now. 以前……,现在…… (yǐqián…, xiànzài…): 以前人们写信,现在大家用手机发信息。(Yǐqián rénmen xiě xìn, xiànzài dàjiā yòng shǒujī fā xìnxī.) — before, letters; now, phone messages. 比 for a direct comparison: 网络聊天比写信快得多。(Wǎngluò liáotiān bǐ xiě xìn kuài de duō.) — chatting online is much faster. Always give the reason: 因为手机很方便,所以人们越来越少写信了。(Yīnwèi shǒujī hěn fāngbiàn, suǒyǐ rénmen yuè lái yuè shǎo xiě xìn le.) — phones are convenient, so fewer letters.
Weigh pros and cons: 虽然…但是…
A mature answer on phones and the internet covers BOTH sides. 虽然……但是…… (suīrán…dànshì…): 虽然手机让联系变得方便,但是也可能让人沉迷网络。(Suīrán shǒujī ràng liánxì biàn de fāngbiàn, dànshì yě kěnéng ràng rén chénmí wǎngluò.) — phones are convenient but can cause addiction. 一方面……,另一方面…… frames advantages (方便, 快, 拉近距离) against disadvantages (沉迷, 影响视力, 减少面对面交流). End with a reasoned view.
Drawn from real examiner reports.
Tech answered superficially, not maturely
Weaker candidates give only basic facts: which app, how often, with whom. The General Conversation expects new-communication topics MATURELY — opinions and both sides. Add a view: 我觉得网络拉近了距离,但是也让人更少面对面交流。(Wǒ juéde wǎngluò lājìn le jùlí, dànshì yě ràng rén gèng shǎo miànduìmiàn jiāoliú.) — closer, but less face-to-face contact.
Digest: sport and leisure and technology topics must be discussed maturely, with opinions and both sides (s22 & s23 Speaking).
Reason vs result (原因 not 结果)
为什么现在的人更喜欢发信息,而不是打电话?(Wèishénme…?) asks for a REASON (原因), not a RESULT (结果). ✗ Giving only 发信息不用马上回复 (a consequence). ✓ 因为发信息比打电话方便,也不会打扰别人。(Yīnwèi fā xìnxī bǐ dǎ diànhuà fāngbiàn, yě bú huì dǎrǎo biéren.) — because texting is more convenient and does not disturb others. Give the cause first, the effect after.
Digest: candidates gave the result/consequence when the reason was asked (s23 Q13; s22 Q11).
Near-synonym loses the key-word mark
Reading and form-completion marks need the EXACT key word. ✗ Writing 电脑 (diànnǎo, computer) or a vague 上网 (shàngwǎng, go online) when the passage names 智能手机 (zhìnéng shǒujī, smartphone) or 视频通话 (shìpín tōnghuà, video call). ✗ The sub-category 微信 when the question wants 社交媒体 (shèjiāo méitǐ, social media). ✓ Reproduce the precise noun exactly — 视频通话, not just 打电话 or 聊天.
Digest: a near-synonym or sub-category instead of the exact key word lost the mark (s23 Ex1 Q3/Q5; s22 Ex1 Q1/Q4).
No pinyin in the writing paper
In the writing paper (Ex4 diary/email and Ex5) write characters only — pinyin is not credited. Do not fall back on pinyin like shìpín tōnghuà for a character you cannot write; choose a word you know, e.g. 手机 (shǒujī, phone) or 上网 (shàngwǎng, go online). Pinyin is accepted only in the Listening answers, never in Paper 1 writing.
Digest: candidates are reminded not to use pinyin in the writing paper (s22 & s23 Ex4).
Lifting instead of re-expressing
In reading short-answer questions, do not copy a whole passage sentence — lifting is not credited, and extra material copied with it can cancel a correct point. Select the point and re-express it in your own words: if a text says phones 让家人的心更近, answer with your own 手机也可以拉近家人的距离, not the copied clause. Keep answers short and on-target.
Digest: copying a whole passage sentence is not credited; select and re-express (s22 Q9/Q13/Q14; s23 Q9/Q12).
Answer every bullet, not a near version
Functional writing must cover every bullet exactly; a near-version of a bullet is the common lost mark. In the s23-style no-devices summer-camp diary, if the bullet asks why the organisers banned devices, answering why you joined the camp misses it. Read each bullet and answer that bullet, not a similar one. Match the diary format and cover all points.
Digest: address every bullet exactly; a near-version of a bullet lost the mark (s23 Q27).
Past time does not always need 了
Learners often think any past-time sentence needs 了. In fact 了 marks COMPLETION or a CHANGE OF STATE, not past tense. A habitual past action uses a time word alone, no 了: ✗ 以前人们常常了写信。 ✓ 以前人们常常写信。(Yǐqián rénmen chángcháng xiě xìn.) — people often wrote letters. 了 suits one completed event: 他上个月买了一部新手机。(Tā shàng ge yuè mǎi le yí bù xīn shǒujī.) — he bought a phone last month.
Functional writing: cover every bullet
For a functional note, email or diary about communication (Ex4, ~8 marks, 100-120 characters): name the specific device, app or action; cover every bullet exactly; write in characters only — no pinyin. Match the format and register.
Value questions: plan both sides
For an article or speaking answer on new communication technology (does the internet bring people closer or push them apart?), plan both sides (方便/拉近距离 vs 沉迷/减少面对面交流), develop each with a connective, contrast now with the past using 以前……现在……, then give a justified opinion.
Treat tech maturely in speaking
In the General Conversation, treat phones and the internet maturely — weigh convenience against addiction, and discuss both sides not just apps. Opener: 你觉得手机对沟通方式有什么影响?(Nǐ juéde shǒujī duì gōutōng fāngshì yǒu shénme yǐngxiǎng?) — how have phones changed communication?
This topic (Area B: Society, B7) covers mobile phones, messaging and the internet, how ways of communicating now compare with before, and the advantages and disadvantages of new communication technology; opinions on this change. It appears in reading and listening (vocabulary, opinions), functional + extended writing, and the speaking conversation. Remember: in the writing paper, write in characters only -- no pinyin.
