Precise hobby verbs + frequency words
Name a specific ACTIVITY verb, not a vague 喜欢做很多事 (xǐhuan zuò hěn duō shì, like many things). Learn exact collocations: 打篮球 (dǎ lánqiú, play basketball), 弹钢琴 (tán gāngqín, play piano), 摄影 (shèyǐng, photography). Add a frequency word: 每天 (měitiān, every day), 常常 (chángcháng, often), 一星期两次 (yì xīngqī liǎng cì, twice a week). Example: 我每星期打两次网球。(Wǒ měi xīngqī dǎ liǎng cì wǎngqiú.) — tennis twice a week. Fuller lists stay in the note.
State interest, skill (得) and 一边…一边…
Three patterns lift a hobby answer above simple naming. 对……感兴趣 (duì…gǎn xìngqù, be interested in): 我对摄影很感兴趣。(Wǒ duì shèyǐng hěn gǎn xìngqù.) — interested in photography. The 得 complement shows how well you do it: 他打篮球打得很好。(Tā dǎ lánqiú dǎ de hěn hǎo.) — plays basketball very well. 一边……一边…… (yìbiān…yìbiān…, two things at once): 我喜欢一边听音乐一边整理照片。(Wǒ xǐhuan yìbiān tīng yīnyuè yìbiān zhěnglǐ zhàopiàn.) — sort photos while listening to music.
Give reasons AND benefits (因为…所以…)
Explain WHY a hobby matters, not just what. Use 因为……所以…… (yīnwèi…suǒyǐ…, because…so…) for reasons and 可以让我 + verb for benefits: 放松 (fàngsōng, relax), 减压 (jiǎnyā, relieve stress), 交朋友 (jiāo péngyou, make friends). Example: 我喜欢爬山,因为可以锻炼身体,也可以放松心情。(Wǒ xǐhuan páshān, yīnwèi kěyǐ duànliàn shēntǐ, yě kěyǐ fàngsōng xīnqíng.) — hiking exercises the body and relaxes the mind. A mature answer also weighs 劳逸结合 (láo yì jiéhé, balancing work and rest).

Lifting instead of re-expressing
In reading short-answer questions (Ex2), do not copy a whole passage sentence — lifting is not credited, and extra material copied with it can cancel a correct point. Select the point and re-express it in your own words: if a text says a hobby 让他放松, answer with your own 这个爱好可以让他放松心情, not the copied clause. Keep answers short and on-target.
Digest: copying a whole passage sentence is not credited; select and re-express (s22 Q9/Q13/Q14; s23 Q9/Q12).
Hobby answered superficially, not maturely
Weaker candidates give only basic facts: what it is, how often, with whom. The General Conversation expects hobby and sport topics MATURELY — opinions and both sides. Add an opinion: 我觉得运动重要的不是输赢,而是健康和团队精神。(Wǒ juéde yùndòng zhòngyào de bú shì shūyíng, ér shì jiànkāng hé tuánduì jīngshén.) — health and team spirit matter, not just winning.
Digest: sport and leisure topics must be discussed maturely, with opinions and both sides, not reduced to where/with whom/how long (s22 & s23 Speaking).
Reason vs result (原因 not 结果)
你为什么喜欢这个爱好?(Nǐ wèishénme xǐhuan zhège àihào?) asks for a REASON (原因), not a RESULT (结果). ✗ Giving only 它让我很放松 (a result). ✓ 因为我从小就学钢琴,而且很喜欢音乐,所以我喜欢弹钢琴。(Yīnwèi wǒ cóngxiǎo jiù xué gāngqín, érqiě hěn xǐhuan yīnyuè, suǒyǐ wǒ xǐhuan tán gāngqín.) — because I learned piano young and love music. Give the reason first, the benefit after.
Digest: candidates gave the result/consequence when the reason was asked (s23 Q13; s22 Q11).
Wrong measure word (个 not 场/部/首)
Hobby nouns bring their own measure words (量词); defaulting to 个 (gè) loses marks. 比赛 (bǐsài, match) takes 场 (chǎng): 一场比赛; 电影 (diànyǐng, film) takes 部 (bù): 一部电影; 歌 (gē, song) takes 首 (shǒu): 一首歌. ✗ 一个精彩的比赛 ✓ 一场精彩的比赛 (yì chǎng jīngcǎi de bǐsài) — an exciting match. Match the measure word to the noun.
Digest: marks lost through imprecise use of simple structures, e.g. measure words (s22 Q10; s23 Q10).
No pinyin in the writing paper
In the writing paper (Ex4 and Ex5) write characters only — pinyin is not credited. Do not render 弹钢琴 as tán gāngqín, and do not fall back on pinyin for a character you cannot write; instead choose a hobby word you know, e.g. 画画 (huàhuà, draw) or 看书 (kànshū, read). Pinyin is accepted only in the Listening answers, never in Paper 1 writing.
Digest: candidates are reminded not to use pinyin in the writing paper (s22 & s23 Ex4).
Near-synonym loses the key-word mark
Reading and form-completion marks need the EXACT key word; a near-synonym or broad category loses the mark. ✗ A vague 运动 (yùndòng, sport) or 玩 (wán, play) when the task wants 打网球 (dǎ wǎngqiú, play tennis) or 摄影 (shèyǐng, photography). ✓ Read the precise word and reproduce it exactly. Learn the high-frequency term for each hobby, not an approximate.
Digest: a near-synonym or sub-category instead of the exact key word lost the mark (s23 Ex1 Q3/Q5; s22 Ex1 Q1/Q4).
Confusing 得 and 地
Learners mix up 得 (de) and 地 (de) because they sound the same. 地 goes BEFORE a verb as an adverbial: 认真地练习 (rènzhēn de liànxí, practise seriously). 得 goes AFTER a verb for a complement of degree: 打得很好 (dǎ de hěn hǎo, plays very well). ✗ 打篮球打地很好 ✓ 打篮球打得很好 (dǎ lánqiú dǎ de hěn hǎo) — plays basketball very well. Mixing them costs marks even in a fluent answer.
Functional writing: cover every bullet
For a functional note or email about a hobby (Ex4, ~8 marks, 100-120 characters): name the specific activity and how often; give one reason you like it; cover every bullet exactly; write in characters only — no pinyin. Match the format and register.
Value questions: plan both sides
For an article or speaking answer on a hobby's VALUE (is gaming a waste of time?), plan both sides first — 为什么支持 and 为什么反对 — develop each with a connective (因为……所以……, 虽然……但是……), then give your own justified opinion. Do not just restate the question.
Treat leisure maturely in speaking
In the General Conversation, go beyond where, with whom and how long — give opinions and both sides (is winning or health more important?). Have an opener ready: 你觉得培养爱好重要吗?(Nǐ juéde péiyǎng àihào zhòngyào ma?) — is developing a hobby important? Justify every view.
This topic (Area B: Society, B6) covers free-time activities and hobbies, how often and why you do them, describing a hobby in detail, and the value of leisure time. It appears in reading and listening (vocabulary, opinions), functional + extended writing, and the speaking conversation. Remember: in the writing paper, write in characters only -- no pinyin.
