Use the exact word, not a near-synonym
This theme is vocabulary-rich, and the exam rewards the exact term over a vague near-synonym (误会 wùhuì, misunderstanding, not a broad 问题). Learn: 同伴压力 (tóngbàn yālì, peer pressure), 吵架 (chǎojià, argue), 道歉 (dàoqiàn, apologise), 和好 (héhǎo, make up), 沟通 (gōutōng, communicate). Full list in the note. Example: 我们因为一个误会吵架了,后来沟通以后就和好了。(Wǒmen yīnwèi yí ge wùhuì chǎojià le, hòulái gōutōng yǐhòu jiù héhǎo le.)
Weigh both sides — mature opinion language
Peer pressure and conflict must be discussed maturely, with two sides, not just narrated. Build weighing phrases: 一方面……,另一方面…… (yì fāngmiàn…, lìng yì fāngmiàn…, on the one hand…, on the other…), 要看情况 (yào kàn qíngkuàng, it depends). Example: 同伴压力不完全是坏事,一方面它可以鼓励我们进步,另一方面也可能让我们做不该做的事。(Tóngbàn yālì bù wánquán shì huàishì, yì fāngmiàn tā kěyǐ gǔlì wǒmen jìnbù, lìng yì fāngmiàn yě kěnéng ràng wǒmen zuò bù gāi zuò de shì.)
Reusable advice-and-resolution patterns
Build resolution answers from a few patterns. 应该/不应该 + verb (yīnggāi/bù yīnggāi, should/should not); 如果……,就…… (rúguǒ…, jiù…, if…, then…); a 把-sentence for a specific problem, 把 + 问题/误会 + 解决 + 了 (bǎ wèntí/wùhuì jiějué le); ……处理得 + 好/不好 (chǔlǐ de hǎo/bù hǎo, handled well or badly). Example: 如果朋友要你做你不想做的事,你就应该勇敢地拒绝,然后好好地沟通。(Rúguǒ péngyou yào nǐ zuò nǐ bù xiǎng zuò de shì, nǐ jiù yīnggāi yǒnggǎn de jùjué, ránhòu hǎohǎo de gōutōng.)

Reason 原因 ≠ result 结果
When explaining a disagreement, learners answer the wrong question — giving what happened AFTER the argument (the result) when asked what CAUSED it. Keep 原因 (yuányīn, reason) and 结果 (jiéguǒ, result) apart and link them with 因为……,所以…… ✗ 他们为什么吵架?—— 他们几天没说话。(the result) ✓ 他们吵架是因为一个误会。(Tāmen chǎojià shì yīnwèi yí ge wùhuì.)
s22 Q11; s23 Q13
的 / 地 / 得 mixed up in advice
Advice about HOW to resolve a conflict needs adverbial 地 (de) before the verb and complement 得 (de) after it — mixing them up is a precision error. 地 before a verb shows how an action is done: 好好地沟通 (hǎohǎo de gōutōng). 得 after a verb shows result or degree: 他处理得很好 (tā chǔlǐ de hěn hǎo). ✗ 好好的沟通、处理的很好。 ✓ 好好地沟通、处理得很好。
s22 Q10; s23 Q10
Copying, not re-expressing
Asked what advice a passage gives, weaker candidates lift a whole sentence — including irrelevant clauses — instead of selecting the point and re-expressing it. Lifting is not credited, and copied extra material can cancel a correct point. ✓ Re-express: 她的朋友建议她冷静地沟通,而不是生气。(Tā de péngyou jiànyì tā lěngjìng de gōutōng, ér bú shì shēngqì.)
s22 Q9/Q13/Q14; s23 Q9/Q12
了 does not mark past tense
了 marks completion or a change of state, not tense, so it is not attached to a habitual action signalled by 常常 or 每天. ✗ 他们常常吵架了。 ✓ 他们常常吵架。(Tāmen chángcháng chǎojià.) — They argue often. 了 is right for one completed event: 我昨天已经跟他道歉了。(Wǒ zuótiān yǐjīng gēn tā dàoqiàn le.) — I already apologised to him yesterday.

Extra material cancels a right point
Short, precise, on-target answers score; a mark cannot be given if the examiner has to pick the correct point out of a longer, rambling response, and extra contradictory material can cancel a correct point. When asked how a conflict was resolved, name the key action (道歉 dàoqiàn, apologise; 沟通 gōutōng, communicate) rather than retelling the whole story.
s22 & s23 key messages
Wrong character changes the meaning
A wrong character that changes the meaning loses the mark; an inaccuracy is tolerated only if the message stays unambiguous. Watch same-pinyin, different-tone words and look-alike characters. For this theme, keep 原谅 (yuánliàng, forgive) and 和好 (héhǎo, make up) written correctly, and in the writing paper use characters only — pinyin is not credited.
s22 & s23 Listening
Peer pressure is not only harmful
Wrong idea: 同伴压力 only means friends pushing you toward bad behaviour, and the mature response to a disagreement is to avoid the person. In fact peer influence can be POSITIVE as well as negative, so weigh both sides; and avoiding conflict (逃避冲突, táobì chōngtū) does not resolve it — examiners reward 沟通 and 解决, not silence. ✗ 同伴压力永远是坏事,最好的办法是不理朋友。 ✓ 同伴压力有好也有坏,遇到冲突应该主动沟通,而不是逃避。
s22 & s23 Speaking
把-sentences always need a completion word
Learners think 把 (bǎ) just reorders the object and can be dropped. In fact 把 fronts a SPECIFIC, definite object that the verb disposes of or changes, and the verb ALWAYS needs a result or completion element after it — a bare verb is ungrammatical. ✗ 我解决把问题。 ✗ 我把问题解决。(no completion word) ✓ 我把问题解决了。(Wǒ bǎ wèntí jiějué le.) ✓ 她把误会说清楚了。(Tā bǎ wùhuì shuō qīngchu le.)

Ex4 diary: cover every bullet
For the functional diary or email (Ex4, ~8 marks): answer every bullet EXACTLY — why it happened, how you felt, the resolution — not a near version; match the format and an informal register; stay within 100-120 characters; write in characters only, no pinyin.
Ex5 article: both sides + own view
For the extended article (Ex5, ~22 marks, 250-300 characters) on peer pressure: plan both sides, develop each point with a connective (虽然……但是……), and add your OWN view instead of restating the stimulus. Read the prompt so you argue the side asked.
Reading: precise, complete answers
In reading and listening keep answers short and precise: re-express the point in your own words, keep the sentence complete, and match the word class in a gap-fill. Keep 原因 and 结果 apart; in an MCQ tick exactly one box — two ticks void the mark.
This topic (Area A: Young People & Education, A4) covers peer pressure, disagreements and arguments with friends, resolving conflict, giving advice and describing feelings. It appears in reading and listening (a diary or article about a disagreement), functional + extended writing, and the speaking conversation, where it must be treated maturely -- both sides of an issue, not just events retold. Remember: in the writing paper, write in characters only -- no pinyin.
