Precise job and workplace words
Career questions turn on the exact high-frequency job word, not a vague paraphrase: doctor 医生 (yīshēng), engineer 工程师 (gōngchéngshī), lawyer 律师 (lǜshī), nurse 护士 (hùshi), programmer 程序员 (chéngxùyuán), company 公司 (gōngsī), office 办公室 (bàngōngshì). Reach for the exact title, not 帮助病人的人. Example: 我的理想是当一名医生,因为我想帮助生病的人。(Wǒ de lǐxiǎng shì dāng yì míng yīshēng, yīnwèi wǒ xiǎng bāngzhù shēngbìng de rén.) — my dream is to be a doctor, because I want to help sick people.
Study-vs-work reason language
A2 rewards WHY, not just WHAT. Build 我打算……,因为…… (wǒ dǎsuàn…, yīnwèi… — I plan to…, because…) and compare study with work using 一方面……另一方面…… (yì fāngmiàn…lìng yì fāngmiàn…) or 与其……不如…… (yǔqí…bùrú… — rather than…, better to…). Example: 我打算上大学学习计算机,因为这个行业机会很多。(Wǒ dǎsuàn shàng dàxué xuéxí jìsuànjī, yīnwèi zhège hángyè jīhuì hěn duō.) — I plan to study computing at university, because this field has many opportunities.
Ambition + condition patterns
Most career answers build from a few frames: 我的理想是…… (wǒ de lǐxiǎng shì… — my ambition is…); 将来我想…… (jiānglái wǒ xiǎng… — in future I want to…); 如果……,我就…… (rúguǒ…, wǒ jiù… — if…, then I will…) for a conditional plan. Example: 如果我的中文学得好,我将来就想当翻译。(Rúguǒ wǒ de Zhōngwén xué de hǎo, wǒ jiānglái jiù xiǎng dāng fānyì.) — if I learn Chinese well, in future I will want to become a translator.
Drawn from real examiner reports.
Reason for the job ≠ its result
Asked 你为什么想当医生?(why do you want to be a doctor?), weaker answers give a consequence of the job, not the motivating reason. ✗ 因为我会有很多钱。(a result, not the reason) ✓ 因为我喜欢帮助别人,而且我对科学很感兴趣。(Yīnwèi wǒ xǐhuan bāngzhù biéren, érqiě wǒ duì kēxué hěn gǎn xìngqù.) — because I like helping others and am interested in science. Keep 原因 (reason, answers why) apart from 结果 (result).
s22 Q11; s23 Q13
Vague description ≠ the exact word
Career and study answers need the exact term. ✗ 一个卖东西的地方 ✓ 售货员 (shòuhuòyuán) — shop assistant. ✗ 一个学更多东西的地方 ✓ 大学 (dàxué) — university. Learn the precise noun for the job or place; candidates familiar with the exact key word scored well, while a near-synonym or vague sub-category loses the mark.
s23 Ex1 Q3/Q5; s22 Ex1 Q1/Q4
Restating the prompt ≠ a view
For a task such as whether students should do work experience every term, weaker candidates repeat the question or a stimulus comment almost unchanged. Develop each idea with connectives (因为……所以……, 虽然……但是……, 不但……而且……) and state and justify your OWN view. Some candidates also misread the prompt and argued the wrong side.
s23 Ex5; s22 & s23 Q28
No pinyin in the writing paper
In Paper 1 writing (Ex4 and Ex5) write in characters only — candidates are reminded not to use pinyin in their writing. Pinyin earns no credit there; it is accepted only as a character substitute in Listening answers, where tones are optional but the answer must be unambiguous. Practise career words (工程师, 实习, 专业) as characters, not pinyin.
s22 & s23 Ex4
Incomplete simple sentence
Even strong candidates lose marks through imprecise use of SIMPLE structures; a grammatically incomplete sentence with incomplete meaning is not credited. Get the basic career sentence exactly right — subject, verb and object present — before reaching for complex language: 我打算上大学学工程 is complete, whereas a fragment that drops the verb is not.
s22 Q10; s23 Q10
Extra material cancels a right answer
Imprecision and answering more than asked can cancel a correct point: the mark cannot be awarded if the Examiner has to choose the correct answer from a longer response. Extra, contradictory or ambiguous material may cancel an otherwise-correct answer. Keep career answers short, precise and on-target — give the exact point and stop.
s22 & s23 Key messages
Money alone is a weak career reason
A weak idea: any career answer is strong if it mentions money. Examiners reward a RANGE of genuine reasons — interest 兴趣 (xìngqù), aptitude 擅长 (shàncháng), or prospects 发展机会 (fāzhǎn jīhuì) — not just 钱多 (qián duō) alone. ✗ 我想当医生,因为钱多。 ✓ 我想当医生,因为我对科学感兴趣,也想帮助别人,虽然我知道医生的工作很辛苦。— interested in science, want to help, though the work is hard.
会/能/可以 are not interchangeable
Learners treat 会 (huì), 能 (néng) and 可以 (kěyǐ) as one word for can. They differ: 会 is a learned SKILL (我会说中文 — I can speak Chinese); 能 is CAPACITY, often physical (我能在周末工作 — I can work at weekends); 可以 is PERMISSION (我可以申请这份工作吗?— may I apply?). ✗ 我可以说流利的中文,所以想当翻译。(skill, not permission) ✓ 我会说流利的中文,所以我想当翻译。— I can speak fluent Chinese, so I want to be a translator.

Career note routine (Ex4)
Ex4 (~8 marks, 100-120 chars): state the plan (我打算……/我的理想是……), give ONE precise reason (not vague or result-based), match format and register, and write in characters only. Cover every bullet exactly, not a near version.
Study vs work: both sides
For an extended article or speaking discussion on further study vs work, plan for-and-against with connectives, weigh university against going straight to work, and give a personal, justified conclusion — do not simply restate the question.
Reason, not result or money
When giving why you chose a career, give a genuine motivating REASON (interest 兴趣, aptitude 擅长, helping others), not a result like 钱多 (lots of money). Distinguish 原因 (reason) from 结果 (result); a range of developed reasons scores better than money alone.
Speak about careers maturely
In the speaking conversation, treat careers maturely: weigh further study against work, and discuss part-time work and prospects with reasons rather than only naming a job. Bring new, spontaneous language — an over-rehearsed monologue is marked down.
This topic (Area A: Young People & Education, A2) covers jobs and professions, further study vs going straight to work, ambitions and plans, reasons for career choices, and part-time work. It appears in reading and listening (vocabulary, opinions), functional + extended writing, and the speaking presentation/conversation. Remember: in the writing paper, write in characters only -- no pinyin.
