Precise subject and facility words
School-life marks turn on the exact high-frequency word, not a vague paraphrase: chemistry 化学 (huàxué), library 图书馆 (túshūguǎn), timetable 课程表 (kèchéngbiǎo), homework 作业 (zuòyè), classmate 同学 (tóngxué). Name the precise noun, not 放很多书的房间. Example: 我们学校有一个很大的图书馆,我经常放学后去那里做作业。(Wǒmen xuéxiào yǒu yí gè hěn dà de túshūguǎn, wǒ jīngcháng fàngxué hòu qù nàlǐ zuò zuòyè.) — our school has a big library and I often do homework there.
Opinion + reason, not bare like/dislike
A1 rewards WHY you like or find a subject hard, not a bare statement. Build 我(最)喜欢……,因为…… (wǒ (zuì) xǐhuan…, yīnwèi… — I (most) like…, because…) and contrast with 虽然……,但是…… (suīrán…, dànshì… — although…, …). Example: 我最喜欢的科目是历史,因为历史老师讲的故事很有意思。(Wǒ zuì xǐhuan de kēmù shì lìshǐ, yīnwèi lìshǐ lǎoshī jiǎng de gùshi hěn yǒuyìsi.) — my favourite subject is history, because the teacher's stories are interesting.
Word order + 必须/应该/可以/不能 for rules
Timetable and rules answers need correct word order (time/place before the verb) and the right obligation word: 必须 (bìxū, must — strict rule), 应该 (yīnggāi, should — recommendation), 可以 (kěyǐ, may — permission), 不能 (bùnéng, may not — prohibition). Example: 学生上课的时候必须穿校服,下课以后可以穿自己的衣服。(Xuésheng shàngkè de shíhou bìxū chuān xiàofú, xiàkè yǐhòu kěyǐ chuān zìjǐ de yīfu.) — during lessons students must wear uniform; after class they may wear their own clothes.
Drawn from real examiner reports.
Lifting ≠ answering in your own words
Asked what a passage says about a rule, weaker candidates copy a whole sentence instead of selecting the point. ✓ 学生上课时不能用手机。(Xuésheng shàngkè shí bùnéng yòng shǒujī.) — students may not use phones in lessons. Select the exact point and re-express it in your own words; a copied answer with extra or wrong material can cancel a correct point.
s22 Q9/Q13/Q14; s23 Q9/Q12
Vague description ≠ the exact word
Reading and listening answers need the exact high-frequency term. ✗ 一个放很多书的房间 (vague, no noun) ✓ 图书馆 (túshūguǎn) — library. ✗ 我们做实验的地方 ✓ 实验室 (shíyànshì) — laboratory. Learn the precise noun for the subject or facility rather than describing it in a roundabout way; a near-synonym or sub-category loses the mark.
s23 Ex1 Q3/Q5; s22 Ex1 Q1/Q4
Incomplete simple sentence
Simple sentences must still be grammatically COMPLETE with the required element present — do not drop the verb. ✗ 早上上课,下午。(no verb in the second clause) ✓ 我们早上上课,下午做体育活动。(Wǒmen zǎoshang shàngkè, xiàwǔ zuò tǐyù huódòng.) — we have lessons in the morning and do sports in the afternoon. Even strong candidates lose marks on imprecise basics.
s22 Q10; s23 Q10
Restating the question ≠ a view
For an extended-writing debate on school life (e.g. whether students should have less homework, or do work experience each term), do not just repeat the prompt or the stimulus comments. Develop your OWN reasoned view with connectives (因为……所以……, 虽然……但是……). Candidates who merely re-stated the two stimulus comments, or argued the wrong side, lost marks.
s23 Ex5; s22 & s23 Q28
No pinyin in the writing paper
In Paper 1 writing (Ex4 and Ex5) you must write in characters only — candidates are reminded not to use pinyin in their writing. Pinyin earns no credit there; it is accepted only as a substitute for a character in the Listening answers, where tones are not required but the answer must be unambiguous. Practise school vocabulary (课程表, 实验室, 校规) as characters, not pinyin.
s22 & s23 Ex4
Extra material cancels a right answer
Imprecision and answering more than asked can cancel a correct point: the mark cannot be awarded if the Examiner has to choose the correct answer from a longer response. Extra, contradictory or ambiguous material may cancel an otherwise-correct answer. Keep school-life answers short, precise and on-target — give the exact point asked for and stop.
s22 & s23 Key messages
必须/应该/可以/不能 not interchangeable
Learners treat 必须, 应该, 可以 and 不能 as one word for must. They are not: 必须 is a STRICT requirement (学生必须准时到校 — must arrive on time); 应该 a RECOMMENDATION (学生应该尊重老师 — should respect teachers); 可以 PERMISSION (下课以后可以离开教室 — may leave after class); 不能 PROHIBITION (上课时不能吃东西 — may not eat in lessons). If a penalty attaches it is a strict rule: 学生必须穿校服 (bìxū), not 应该.
general FL trap
了 is not a past-tense marker
了 marks COMPLETION or a CHANGE OF STATE, not English past tense. It is NOT used with habitual actions (每天/常常) even when narrating the past. ✗ 我昨天每天上数学课了。(每天 = habitual, so 了 is wrong) ✓ 我昨天上了数学课,也做完了作业。(shàng le… zuòwán le… — attended class and finished homework: completion, not tense). Habitual needs no 了: 我每天早上八点上课。

Functional note routine (Ex4)
Ex4 (~8 marks, 100-120 chars): state the point with the precise subject/facility word, use the right obligation word (必须/应该/可以/不能) for a rule, match format and register, write in characters only, and cover every bullet exactly — not a near version of it.
Debate: both sides + your view
For an extended article or speaking debate on school life (less homework, phones at school), plan for-and-against with connectives, then give a personal, justified conclusion — do not simply restate the question.
Reading/listening precision
Learn the exact key words (图书馆, 实验室, 课程表) — a precise noun scores, a vague near-synonym does not. Select the point and re-express it; do not lift whole sentences, and keep answers short so surplus material cannot cancel a correct one.
Speak about school maturely
In the speaking conversation, treat school topics maturely: give opinions with reasons and weigh both sides of a rule or debate rather than listing facts. Bring new, spontaneous language — an over-rehearsed monologue is marked down.
This topic (Area A: Young People & Education, A1) covers school subjects, the timetable, exams, school rules, school facilities, and opinions about school and study. It appears in reading and listening (vocabulary, opinions), functional + extended writing, and the speaking presentation/conversation. Remember: in the writing paper, write in characters only -- no pinyin.
