The four factors of production
The four factors a business combines are enterprise (takes the risk and organises the rest), capital (machinery, buildings and money), land (natural resources and the site) and labour (the effort of workers). The 5.3 focus is that the BALANCE between them changes as a firm grows: it may replace labour with capital (machines doing jobs people did), need more land, or lean more on enterprise. Each change trades off output, cost and jobs.
Productivity is output per worker
Productivity measures how much output each worker (or unit of input) produces: Higher productivity means the same workers produce more, so cost per unit falls and the firm competes better. Raise it via capital, training, motivation or better organisation. It is output PER worker, NOT total output — more workers can lift total output without raising productivity.
Capital-intensive vs labour-intensive
Capital-intensive production relies mainly on machinery and robots — it suits high-volume standardised products, giving consistent quality and low unit labour cost, but is costly to set up and inflexible. Labour-intensive production relies mainly on people — it suits bespoke or personal products and is flexible and cheaper to start, but wages are a large ongoing cost. As a firm grows it often becomes MORE capital-intensive to raise productivity.

Capital-intensive vs the factor capital
Two ideas share the word capital. The FACTOR capital = machinery, buildings and money. Capital-intensive PRODUCTION = a method relying mainly on machines, not workers. Asked to compare it with labour-intensive, some just define 'capital' — instead describe the METHOD (mostly machines vs mostly people), not whether the firm is wealthy.

Productivity vs total output
Productivity and total output differ. Total output = the total quantity made; productivity = output PER worker (total output / number of workers). Hiring more workers can raise total output while productivity is unchanged; it rises only when each worker produces MORE — via better machines, training or motivation.
Define robots by their use, not just name
Asked to define 'robots' (or 'capital'), a generic reference that just names them misses the mark — the definition must tie them to their USE in production. Robots are machines that carry out production tasks automatically, working faster and more consistently than people. A bare 'robots are machines' without the production link does not earn the mark.

Explain: develop one point, do not list
On an Explain item (e.g. an advantage of robotics), only ONE reason is credited — identify it, then develop it in a chain: robots work faster and more consistently -> output per worker rises -> cost per unit falls. Listing several advantages wastes time and earns no more. Explain needs development, not extra reasons, and needs no case context.

State/Outline needs case context
On a State or Outline item about a factor or method, a correct generic point loses the AO2 application mark unless it is linked to the named firm. Naming the business is not context — add a specific detail (its product, its workers, its site). Do not just say 'robots raise productivity'; say how they raise the output of THIS firm's product.

Compute output per worker, not totals
Productivity = output DIVIDED BY workers (output per worker) — not the total output, and not workers divided by output. To judge whether productivity has risen, compare output per worker over time, not the totals: total output can climb while output per worker is flat. Show the working so a method mark stands even if the final figure is wrong.

More machines is not automatically best
Two traps. (1) 'More machines is always better' — swapping labour for capital can cut unit cost, but not always right: machinery is costly, breakdowns halt production, and a bespoke producer may stay labour-intensive. (2) 'Higher productivity has no downsides' — cutting jobs or over-pushing staff harms quality and motivation. The best factor mix DEPENDS on the case.
Show the productivity working
No factor formula is given in the exam. If a Calculate part appears (productivity = output / workers, or its percentage change), recall it and show the working — a method mark stands even if the figure is wrong; for percentage change, divide by the OLD value.
AO4: a supported it-depends judgement
A Justify or Evaluate on going more capital-intensive needs a SUPPORTED judgement, not a two-sided list: weigh higher productivity and lower unit cost against cost, inflexibility and job losses, then decide with an 'it depends' conclusion.
Define by use; apply on State and Analyse
Precision plus application wins marks. Define a factor or method by what it DOES in production — a bare word is not enough. State items need a link to the named firm. Analyse = apply to the firm and follow cause to effect, with no verdict.
