The five levels: organelles to organ systems
Organisms are organised in a strict hierarchy, each level built from the one below: organelles → cells → tissues → organs → organ systems. ORGANELLE: a structure inside a cell with a specific job (mitochondrion, nucleus). CELL: the basic unit of life (red blood cell). TISSUE: similar cells working together (muscle tissue). ORGAN: two or more different tissues working together (stomach, leaf). ORGAN SYSTEM: several organs working together (digestive system).
Tissue vs organ — the two-element definitions
This is the sharpest mark-scheme trap here. TISSUE: a group of similar (same type of) cells that work together to perform a specific function — both elements needed. ORGAN: a structure of two or more DIFFERENT types of tissue that work together for a specific function. The distinguishing word is 'different': a tissue has one cell type; an organ has several. Example: muscle tissue vs the stomach (muscle + epithelial + glandular tissue).
The digestive system shows all five levels
The digestive system links all five levels. ORGANELLE: mitochondria in gut-lining cells release energy for active transport. CELL: absorptive cells line the small intestine. TISSUE: epithelial tissue lines the gut; muscle tissue forms its wall. ORGAN: the stomach (muscle + epithelial + glandular tissue) and small intestine. ORGAN SYSTEM: the whole system (mouth, oesophagus, stomach, intestines, pancreas, liver) digests and absorbs food.

Order: organelle to organ system
The correct order, smallest to largest, is organelles → cells → tissues → organs → organ systems. A common error reverses cells and tissues, or omits organelles when all five are asked for. A helpful mnemonic is O-C-T-O-S. Examiners award the mark only for the full, correctly sequenced list — a partial or out-of-order answer does not score.
A group of cells is not enough for a tissue
Defining a tissue as 'a group of cells that work together' is too vague and scores zero — it omits 'similar' (same type of) cells, the feature that separates a tissue from an organ. The mark-scheme form is: a group of SIMILAR cells that work together to perform a specific function. Both elements are required.
A group of tissues does not make an organ
Defining an organ as 'a group of tissues that do a job' scores zero — it omits 'different types of tissue', the defining feature. The mark-scheme form is: a structure made of TWO OR MORE DIFFERENT types of tissue that work together to perform a specific function. Miss the word 'different' and the mark is lost.
Do not name an organ where a tissue is asked
Naming an organ where a tissue is asked (or vice versa) scores zero. The heart, stomach, kidney and leaf are ORGANS (each made of several tissue types). Muscle tissue, epithelial tissue, xylem and phloem are TISSUES (each mainly one cell type). Learn at least two examples per level so you pick from the right one.
An organelle is not a cell
An organelle is a structure INSIDE a cell (mitochondrion, chloroplast, nucleus, ribosome); a cell is the whole unit that contains organelles. Do not call a mitochondrion or a nucleus a 'cell', and do not treat the nucleus as the same level as a red blood cell — the nucleus sits one level below.
An organ is not an organ system
A single organ is not an organ system. The heart is one organ; the circulatory system is an organ system made of the heart plus blood vessels. An organ system always contains more than one organ working together, so naming just one organ where a system is asked loses the mark.
Name the levels in order
For 'name/list the levels', write all five in order — organelle → cell → tissue → organ → organ system — and never skip one. A partial or out-of-order list usually scores nothing, so learn the sequence (O-C-T-O-S) as a single unit.
Give a two-element definition
For 'define tissue/organ/organ system', give BOTH elements: (a) what it is made of — similar cells / different tissues / several organs — and (b) that they work together for a specific function. One element alone is not enough for the mark.
Pick examples at the right level
For 'give an example of a tissue/organ/system', name one at that exact level, not one above or below. Safe answers: tissue = muscle or epithelial tissue; organ = stomach, heart or leaf; organ system = digestive or circulatory system.
