Water pollution and plastic pollution
Untreated sewage and excess fertiliser run-off both add nitrate and other mineral ions to water, which triggers eutrophication; sewage also spreads water-borne disease to humans. Non-biodegradable plastic is different: no decomposer breaks it down, so it persists — aquatic animals ingest it or are entangled in discarded nets, and on land it is eaten by animals and smothers habitats. Credited fixes: recycling, reusing, biodegradable alternatives.
The enhanced greenhouse effect
The natural greenhouse effect keeps Earth warm enough for life. Human activity has raised carbon dioxide and methane above natural levels, so MORE of the heat radiated from Earth's surface is trapped — the enhanced greenhouse effect. comes from burning fossil fuels and from deforestation (less removal by photosynthesis); from anaerobic decomposition in cattle, rice paddies and landfill. Result: global warming and climate change.
(Extended) Eutrophication — the six-step chain
Eutrophication is an ordered chain, and the LINKS earn the marks: excess nitrate ions enter the water → increased growth of producers (algal bloom), as nitrate was the limiting factor → the short-lived algae die, so decomposition increases → aerobic decomposer bacteria multiply → their increased aerobic respiration causes a reduction in dissolved oxygen → organisms requiring dissolved oxygen die. Never compress it to "algae grow, fish die".

Decomposers use the oxygen, not the algae
Dissolved oxygen falls because aerobic decomposer bacteria, feeding on the mass of dead algae, respire in enormous numbers — that respiration is what consumes it. Answers stopping at "the dead algae block the light" or "the algae use up the oxygen" never reach the marking point. Name the decomposers, and name aerobic respiration.

Say "enhanced" greenhouse effect
The natural greenhouse effect is not the problem — it keeps the planet habitable. What causes climate change is the enhanced greenhouse effect: the extra heat trapped because human activity has pushed carbon dioxide and methane above natural concentrations. Writing "the greenhouse effect" on its own loses the mark.

"Cows" is not a source of methane
Examiners want the process, not the object. Methane comes from the anaerobic decomposition of organic matter — in cattle digestion, in flooded rice paddy fields, and in landfill sites. Naming only "cows" or "rubbish" says where it happens without saying what happens, and rarely earns the mark on its own.

Sewage on humans ≠ sewage on the river
Check which target the question names. Sewage in a river kills aquatic organisms via eutrophication; sewage in a water supply spreads water-borne disease to the people who drink or wash in it. Candidates asked for the effect on HUMANS describe dying fish and polluted rivers instead, and score nothing.

Burning plastic is not a solution
Only recycling, reusing and switching to biodegradable alternatives are credited as ways to reduce non-biodegradable plastic pollution. Burning plastic releases toxic gases — you have swapped one pollution problem for another. Fines for littering change behaviour but do not reduce the plastic already produced.

Fish suffocate — they are not poisoned
The last step of eutrophication is death by oxygen starvation. Fish and aquatic insect larvae die because the dissolved oxygen they need for aerobic respiration has been used up — not because the fertiliser has poisoned the water, and not because the algal bloom shaded them. Say "lack of dissolved oxygen".
Non-biodegradable ≠ biodegradable
Biodegradable waste — sewage, dead algae, food waste — can be broken down by decomposers, and that decomposition is exactly what drives eutrophication and generates landfill methane. Non-biodegradable plastic cannot be broken down by any decomposer, so it accumulates instead of being recycled into the ecosystem.

For any "describe the effects of..." pollution question give three things: the precise source (fertiliser run-off, fossil-fuel combustion, discarded nets), the mechanism that does the harm (decomposer respiration, heat trapping, ingestion), and the named effect.
Write out every link of the chain
Examiners credit each link of the eutrophication chain separately. Compressing it to "fertiliser makes the fish die" throws away the intermediate marks. Number the steps, or join them with arrows, so every stage is visible on the page.
Describe vs explain
"Describe" (the Core statements on sewage, fertiliser, plastics and greenhouse gases) wants sources AND effects stated. "Explain" (the Extended eutrophication statement) additionally wants the causal link between consecutive steps — why each stage produces the next.

The ENHANCED greenhouse effect: the natural greenhouse effect keeps Earth warm enough for life. Human activity has increased and concentrations beyond natural levels, trapping MORE heat than before — this extra, human-caused warming is the enhanced greenhouse effect, and it causes climate change (e.g. rising global temperatures, rising sea levels, changing rainfall patterns).
Always write "enhanced greenhouse effect," not just "greenhouse effect," when describing the human-caused climate problem.
