The Sun — the principal energy input
Light energy from the Sun is the principal source of energy input to biological systems. Producers (green plants and algae) absorb it using chlorophyll and convert it into chemical energy stored in glucose by photosynthesis. Source vs converter: the Sun is the origin, producers only transform it into a form that can pass along a chain. Almost every food chain traces back to the Sun; deep-sea vent ecosystems are outside 0610 scope.
Trophic levels — a one-way path
Producers → primary consumers (herbivores) → secondary consumers → tertiary consumers, each level feeding on the one before it. Decomposers (bacteria and fungi) feed on dead bodies, fallen leaves and faeces from every level, not only the last one, and release that energy by their own respiration. Energy flow is unidirectional: it is never returned to the Sun or recycled back to producers. Nutrients are different — they ARE recycled (sub-topic 19.3).
Heat loss — less energy at each level
At every transfer most of the energy taken in is lost, so less reaches the next level. Respiration is the largest loss: energy powering movement, growth and body warmth is dissipated to the surroundings as heat. Smaller losses come from egestion (undigested food in faeces), excretion (urea still holds chemical energy) and uneaten parts such as bones and roots. Heat cannot be recaptured, so ecosystems need a continuous solar input and chains rarely exceed 4-5 levels.

The Sun is the source, not the plant
Asked for the ORIGINAL source of energy in a food chain, candidates write "the grass" or "the producer". Producers do not make energy — they absorb light from the Sun and convert it into chemical energy in glucose. When a question says "originally" or "ultimate source", the only answer that scores is the Sun (or light energy from the Sun).

Arrows point prey → predator
A food-chain arrow means "energy flows to" — it points from the organism eaten to the organism eating it, as in grass → rabbit → fox. Drawing fox → rabbit → grass reverses the energy flow and reads as the grass eating the rabbit. Read every arrowhead as pointing at whichever organism is receiving the energy.

Decomposers are not carnivores
Decomposers are bacteria and fungi that feed on dead organic matter and waste, never on living prey, so "carnivore" is wrong. They are also not a level sitting above the tertiary consumer: they break down dead producers and dead consumers from every trophic level at once, releasing that energy through their own respiration.

Energy flows; nutrients cycle
Writing that energy "goes round the ecosystem" merges two different things. Energy enters from the Sun, passes one way along the chain and leaves as heat that cannot be recaptured or returned to the Sun. Nutrients such as carbon and nitrogen genuinely are recycled by decomposers back to producers. Energy flow is a line; nutrient flow is a loop.
Organisms release energy, not make it
Answers saying an organism "produces energy" or "makes energy in respiration" lose the mark. Energy is never created — respiration releases energy already stored chemically in glucose, which itself came from light captured by a producer. Use "release", "transfer" or "convert", never "produce".

Photosynthesis is a process, not a source
"Photosynthesis" is a tempting answer to "what is the source of energy for this food chain?", but it names the mechanism rather than the origin. Photosynthesis is how a producer converts light energy into chemical energy; the energy itself comes from the Sun. Name the Sun for a source question, photosynthesis only when the process is asked for.
The four-part energy-flow scaffold
For "describe the flow of energy", give all four parts: origin (the Sun, as light energy); conversion (producers make glucose by photosynthesis); transfer (producer → primary → secondary → tertiary, with decomposers on dead matter); and loss (heat, mainly from respiration).
Match the command word
"Describe" wants the stages stated in order. "Explain" wants that sequence plus the reason the energy falls — respiration releasing heat to the surroundings. "Suggest", on unfamiliar data, wants the same biology applied to the organisms you have actually been given.
Use the organisms you are given
Generic answers about "producers and consumers" drop application marks when the question names a chain. Write it out with both labels: grass (producer) → grasshopper (primary consumer) → frog (secondary consumer) → snake (tertiary consumer).
Say heat, and say respiration
"Energy is lost" on its own scores nothing. Name the form — heat — and the process that releases it — respiration powering movement, growth and body warmth. Bring in egestion, excretion and uneaten parts as the smaller additional losses.
