Fertilisation — fusion of the two nuclei
Fertilisation is the fusion of the nucleus of a sperm cell with the nucleus of an egg cell, forming a zygote — one diploid cell carrying chromosomes from both parents. It normally happens in the oviduct. The zygote then divides repeatedly by mitosis to form an embryo (the syllabus calls it "a ball of cells"), which travels on to the uterus and implants into its thickened lining. Fusion of nuclei, not "sperm meets egg", is the marking point.
Gamete adaptations — three for sperm, two for the egg
Sperm: flagellum (swims toward the egg), mitochondria packed near the midpiece (release energy by respiration to power the flagellum), and an acrosome (a cap of digestive enzymes that clears a path through the jelly coat). Egg cell: energy stores in the large cytoplasm (fuel the embryo's early divisions before implantation) and a jelly coat that hardens the moment one sperm fuses, blocking polyspermy. Compare them on size, structure, motility, numbers.
Placenta — exchange between two separate blood supplies
(Extended) The umbilical cord carries blood vessels between fetus and placenta, where maternal and fetal vessels lie close together across thin membranes with a large surface area. Mother to fetus: oxygen, glucose, amino acids, vitamins, mineral ions and antibodies. Fetus to mother: carbon dioxide and urea, which the mother then excretes — the fetus's own kidneys do not yet excrete to the outside. The amniotic sac holds the fluid that cushions the fetus.

Acrosome ≠ flagellum ≠ mitochondria
Acrosome = a cap of digestive enzymes that digests a path through the egg's jelly coat. Mitochondria = release energy by respiration. Flagellum = movement only. "The flagellum has enzymes that break down the egg coat" earns nothing — the flagellum is a whip-like structure built for swimming, never a source of enzymes. Keep the three strictly separate.

Motility is not "how well it moves"
Motility means the ability to move independently (spontaneously) — for a sperm, to swim under its own power using its flagellum. Answers such as "how fast it swims", or descriptions of the sperm's energy stores instead of a definition, gained no credit. Define the word first, then add the mechanism if the question asks for it.

"Food" and "blood" score nothing
Asked what the umbilical cord and placenta carry, name the dissolved substances. To the fetus: oxygen, glucose, amino acids, vitamins, mineral ions and antibodies. To the mother: carbon dioxide, urea and other excretory products. Bulk terms — "food", "nutrients", "waste", "blood" — are too vague for the mark scheme and are the single most-flagged error here.

Maternal and fetal blood never mix
Exchange happens by diffusion (and some active transport) across thin placental membranes separating two independent circulations. The vessels run close together, giving a short diffusion distance and a large surface area, but no blood crosses — whole blood cells cannot pass. "The mother's blood flows into the baby" is a zero-mark answer.
The placenta is a selective barrier
It lets antibodies cross from mother to fetus, giving temporary passive immunity — name antibodies, not "antigens" or "alleles". But it is not absolute: some pathogens (e.g. rubella virus) and toxins (e.g. nicotine, alcohol) also cross and can harm the fetus. Equally, it does block some pathogens, so never claim maternal antibodies cover every infection.

Fertilisation ≠ implantation
Fertilisation is the fusion of the sperm and egg nuclei and normally happens in the oviduct. Implantation happens days later, once the embryo has reached the uterus and embeds in its thickened lining. Two separate, sequential events. Name implantation explicitly — describing the attachment without the word, or writing "implementation", loses the mark.

Oviduct ≠ uterus on the diagram
The oviduct is the narrow tube leading from the ovary; the uterus is the larger pear-shaped organ below it. Same care with: scrotum (the sac) vs testes (the organs inside it); sperm duct vs urethra; the cervix (neck of the uterus, not part of the vagina); the placenta (a disc on the uterus wall) vs the umbilical cord; and the amniotic sac vs the fluid it holds.
Name the structure, then its verb
"Identify and state the function" awards marks separately for the name and for the function, so never answer with a location. "The testes produce sperm and testosterone", not "the testes are in the scrotum". Reach for an action verb: produces, carries, nourishes, protects.
Give both halves of a function
The prostate gland adds fluid — but the mark is for what that fluid does: it nourishes and protects the sperm. Likewise the oviduct carries the egg cell to the uterus and is where fertilisation normally occurs. Name the substance or structure, then say what it achieves.
"Compare" means both sides, every feature
For sperm against egg cell, answer all four: size (smaller / larger), structure (flagellum, mitochondria, acrosome / jelly coat, energy-rich cytoplasm), motility (motile / non-motile), numbers (millions / one per cycle). A statement about only one gamete is not a comparison.
Amniotic fluid does two jobs
Separate the sac (the membrane) from the fluid it contains, then give both functions of the fluid: it cushions the fetus against physical shocks and allows it to move, which supports muscle and joint development. One function alone rarely secures both marks.
